Perko switch failure

While at Edisto last week, my Perko failed. It would not pass enough current to crank the motor. I believe the old switch was a 8503 model that is rated @250 amps continuous. If that is the case, was the switch too small for a 150hp motor? I am thinking I need a model with a higher amp rating.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what model I need ?

A 250 amp continuous switch is more than adequate. Perko does not list intermittent or momenary load limits, but I can assure you that the starter motor on an outboard does not draw more than 250 amps after the initial inrush of current.

Battery switches don’t usually fail. If you want a higher quality switch, get a Blues Seas. They are tin plated copper instead of plated brass.

those perko switches sometimes get green corrosion on the brass contacts. switching the switch back and forth will sometimes clean off the corrosion

I replace the perkos all the time, they are good for a few years, but let water get to them, or try to crank and engine with a low battery or poor cables, and it will take its toll. The perkos arn’t bad for the money, the Blue Seas seem to be ok( I haven’t taken one apart yet to look inside). The Cole Hersee’s are better than most, but they cost quite a bit more.

cole hersee is what we use, and they are 500 amp rated
