After spending most of the day without a single hit, and a bucket of feisty herring, I tried one last pitch towards a good looking bank.
Herring went down in a way that looked like it caught on a snag… then I saw my line drifting up river.
Reeled down on the circle hook and locked in for a ride up and down the banks for a couple hundred yards. Slid under trees, unwrapped the line in sweepers, and eventually stroked this big girl.
She, along with 95% of the stripes I catch, was released to keep growing. We will meet again one day!!
Nicely done. I’d love to go for that same sleigh ride out of my 'yak.
Like Loon, I have no idea where this particular Savage River is…and I’ve done a ton of fishing between Virginia and South Carolina.
I Googled it and see at least one Savage River in Maryland. Hmmm…maybe I need to plan a road trip up that way sometime.
That beauty came from right here in Columbia, SC… Savage was the only word fitting for its behavior rather than the name of the river haha. That name however, is sworn to secrecy!!!
But is it really much of a secret this time of year?? The big fish have been very particular with live bait, and seem to be keen for the friskiest, biggest herring in the bucket! I’m now on a quest to keep a gizzard shad alive and turn away from light tackle (you can see in the pic my penn battle 3000 with a medium light ugly stik gx2!). Those things are hard to find around these parts

There are gizzards very close to your northern put in place. Seen them there last summer but didn’t have my cast net. Have not been there this year to see if they are there again. Look in pools that have zero current. There is only 1 if you think about it

Dude those things are like lightning!!! Do you think a 6footer would even have a chance?
Also, when you gonna hit me up to fish Chip?? The pigs are coming!!!

6’might get them if u can corner them but a fast sinking 8-10’ is key. 5/8" mesh helps it sink faster.
I am at carowinds this weekend for my youngins birthday then it’s on after that. My next trio will be next fri afternoon. Going to take wounded warriors out on the lake next fri till about noon. then hitting the river…

The new laws have helped to make huge strides in productivity during the summer. I coud’ve kept quite a few for dinner by now but I prefer to see the swim away in hopes of catching them again one day, a little fatter. Next fish is the 40lb great white buffalo out there…
