I fished the outgoing tide mostly trolling grubs with limited success. I caught 4 trout, 2 at 16" using a white grub with long green tail. On the way back in I stopped to fish a point with a Gulp shrimp and caught my personal best Red which was around 34", any guesses to the weight? It was a tough paddle in against the current but a nice day non the less. All fish caught below 41.
The 36" I caught out at Folly a few years ago was 18 pounds according to my tackle box scales, and I’ve checked that against several other fish of similar lengths, and that’s fairly consistent.
I’d guess you’re in the 12-15 pound range for sure.
That is a pretty fish! Helluva fight while on the kayak, I bet?
He started to take me for a ride but I was fishing around those power line poles below the 41 bridge and they were loaded up with Commerants(sp?), under these birds it was literally raining poop. When I hooked this fish it screamed right towards those poles and that poop. At this point I either had to risk a cut off and a poop bath or tighten the drag, drop anchor, and try and turn him. My anchor hooked up about 40 yards from the poles/birds and I turned him about 10 feet from the bases. Unfortuantly for him I was using a lighter weight rod/reel with 6lb test so it took a little while to get him in. I spent a few minutes reviving him and he swam off strong.
Need to measure girth also then use “Length in inches times girth in inches times girth in inches divided by 800” to get weight in pounds. Pic indicates a slim fish with, say, 18-inch girth so 341818/800 = 13.8 pounds.
Come to think of it, that red does look a little slim. Interesting because someone I fished with caught a 28" red on topwater within a mile of that spot and it was also very slim, in fact, it almost looked like a pike - that skinny. Probably a coincidence. There seems to be plenty enough bait around for the fish to eat.
