Personal Boats Used For Hire

Anyone have feed back on using your personally owned boat as a for hire vessel operated by another captain? I have an OUPV/6pack license but make a living detailing boats. My 18’ Privateer sits a good majority of the time in its slip and other than a weekly wash and motor start it doesn’t see much use. I feel like its a good potential opportunity for another inshore captain/company and myself to make a little extra money. I have read on other blogs people saying DONT Do It but really no elaboration. My motor has low hours and all but I feel better about racking up hours than letting it sit. Not to worried about cosmetics. Given my current trade, my 87 looks better than most 07’s! Any thoughts…

You would need charter vessel insurance for one. Then you decide who provides what between the two of you. Rods and Reels, Gas, tackle, bait etc… Then figure out where your business is gonna come from and who is supposed to generate it. Boat needs upgraded life vests most likely as well. Those run about $30-50 each and you will need 6 of them.

get ready for more repair bills, usually throttles are wide open… boat owner pays for gas, not the driver, boat owner pays repairs, not the driver, etc

charter permits… charter insurance and is more for another driver

It would have to be one very trusted, lifelong friend for me to loan them a boat as nice as yours. Cash or not.

Why would you want to? If you don’t use one enough sell your boat to a friend do that whenever you had time you could use it. Or get a smaller use you would use more frequently. I definitely wouldmt let anybody on my boat without me. Unless it was a close trusted friend or family member.

The liability alone would make me think long and hard. The insurance is not really that bad IF the boat sails alot but for occasional trips it can be a real cost burden. I chartered in Florida and by the time the costs were factored in it wasn’t a really profitable business. Now with all the licenses and permits needed it can be a real headache.
