pfd requirements in sc for adult yak operator?

I tried to find it on the scdnr site, but i didn’t. can someone reply with certainty?

All watercraft require 1 pfd per person. Children must wear them in boats under 16’. PWC users must wear them and some wardens have called yaks a PWC; however, the description of a PWC includes a kill switch & lanyard so that can not apply to kayaks & canoes. They are self propelled watercraft generally under 16’. Hope this helps.

Thanks. A more straitforward question may have been, can I wear a co2 powered type inflatable (stearns, mustang, ect) pfd and be legal? it is a type v but considered type II if worn.

Inflatable’s only count if they’re being worn.</font id=“blue”>

If they are type 3 PFDs ( front entry, orange Horse collars count for this as well) you just have to have an approved PFD ON BOARD. If you are using a Pull over or inflatable PFD, YOU MUST HAVE IT ON. Don’t forget to have a whistle as well.

Nightime (anytime before official sun rise or after official sunset), you need a directional white light. Most of my buddies use a headlamp that you can wear. (I know you didn’t ask about this, but thought it might be useful.

good topic.

dont forget the whistle. pfd and whistle are the only things required by dnr. unless after dark, then you need a light.

I have an orange stearns (2.99$ at sports auth) still in plastic that stays in the hull of my kayaks. according to the law this is what it takes to be safe in a kayak.

Then Ill take my motorcycle out on 26 without a helmet.

fyi, no open container laws on kayak or boats, so drink up!

Still in plastic will get you a ticket ! DNR considers that not to be readily available.
