I am trying to post a photo of the 70 pound Wahoo I caught last Saturday at Winyah Scarp. I had come down to fish Martini’s Wahoo Tournament but did not see a definite good weather day, so I opted not to enter. MISTAKE!!! I left the dock at 9:30 am, letting the seas settle down with only me and my 77 year old father-in-law. My father-in-law valiantly subdued a 41 pound Wahoo. Then I caught the 70 pound 7 ounce Wahoo off a Ballyhooed Ilander on the Starboard back line. We also caught a 25 pound King Mackerel. My father-in-law was seasick (I basically fished solo after the first Wahoo.) so we quit fishing at 3:00 after only a little over 3 hours of trolling with over 140 pounds of meat in the box. I guess either of our two wahoos would have finished 2nd in the Wahoo Tournament. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh243/drksuh/Resized70Wahoo4-4-09.jpg
Nice fish doc, tournament or not, your father-in-law had a blast on his wahoo and it is great, at his age, that he can get out in a cc and hit the bluewater.
Doc…
Yes sir…the way it stands right now you would have been in second place and that could have been a $3,000 fish. Wish you would have been in the tourney, I love to see those big ones weighed in!! If youre still in town, come join us Monday night for the awards ceremony at Martinis, Im sure youll see some familiar faces there, Dinner served 6PM.
Doc: I knew you back in the 80’s, when you fished the KM tournaments, not to bring up bad stuff, but I remember when you sank your Hydra Sport, nice to see you’re still catching big ones, and taking dad out. I fished Southport, and Ocean Isle with my GW FishingTeam boat which I sold to Yates Pharr, as you probably know. Best of luck, I now fish Charleston KM and loving it…Also, have a question foryou, we had a cobia caught here this week that was blue top with white bottom, up your way never saw a cobia that color, did you?
MacDaddy, I have never seen a blue cobia. Remora fish can have some colors and have white stripes and resemble small cobias. I actually called York to go with me on this trip, but he was out of town. He and Rube McMullan were with me our last trip in the summer when we loaded the boat with dolphin and released a white marlin. And for the record, my boat partner sunk the Hydra Sport (my first boat) in 1990 while I was at home sleeping off a 24 hour work shift.
