Pigfish?

Is this a pigfish? Caught 2 of these yesterday in 50’ of water at 6HI reef, water temp about 81 deg.

looks like a french or white grunt

It is a grunt, one of the tastiest panfish. They often appear in large schools.

Thanks for the replies. After seeing your post affinity I have to agree that it is a white grunt. Yes eric, it was tasty!

That’s a big grunt.

Grunts are good eating, makes a great sushi or sashimi, and makes a great bait too

Nice grunt, hope you kept it. Theyre pretty tasty

That is a white grunt. I don’t know why they’re called white grunts - They look kinda black. good food!

These are abundant in S Fla. Most folks fry them. Key West poor folks have a specialty: The morning after you fry a mess of grunts, you flake the leftover meat into hot buttered grits. Grits n’ Grunts. Best breakfast ever.

lol Grits and Grunts sounds good to me, I may have to try that with some other flaky fish.

I have done Grits n’ Grunts with
Grunt, inshore Snapper, Freshwater Bream (I have since repented from fresh water fishing), Catfish (ditto), sea trout, sheepshead, whiting. All AOK. Works less well with oilier fish like bluefish / mackerel and with big flakes like grouper. I suspect black drum would work well.
I do not use spots/croakers. I try to fish where those are not so as not to waste bait and time.

I LOVE to find a ‘grunt hole’. You can some times catch 50 or more an hour.

I can assure you that this practice isn’t exclusive to South Florida or Grunts. Here in the Palmetto State, I grew up eating left over fried fish with grits for breakfast (or anytime for that matter) with a slice or 2 of home grown tomatoes and it is terrific with almost any kind of fried fish. We would actually look forward to the morning after a fish fry just for this reason and most people that I knew did it.

I am tied for the state record with that fish at 5 lbs. 10 oz. and they are very good to eat.
