Finally got a day with less then 70% chance of rain. Went lots of miles south, dam near to Savanna looking for new #s for the coming snapper season. Darn near wore out the new electronics on the No Limit searching for new spots. Got hungrey around 1:00 and broke out the grill. Wild Hog Bratwurst lathered in caramelized onions in a wine reduction!
Found something new, caught some Ribbon Fish schooling in 100’on sand bottom, when we dropped the Go Pro down to see what all the sonar returns were all about!
Got on some good bottom and filled the box with some stud gags, smallest over 20lbs.
20’viz and that nasty thermocline is gone. Had a great day aboard the No Limit with Marvin the Marvelous, Realfish01 and JordanonaYak who shot the biggest fish of the day!(Said he don’t own a speedo either)Cooked my first AF Pompano, provided by a new freediver, Zack, blackened on the grill and it was awesome, thanks Dad1
It looks like you “BOYS” had a good trip. Wish I could get down to ribbonfish with you. I guess I’ll just have to stay in Jersey and fish for bluefin and yellowfin. Later
Here is a video of the Ribbon fish that RealFish put together. Watch at the very end and you can see a king mackerel chasing the ribbons. http://youtu.be/8wvnlkjf60s
Ribbon fish are not kind to butterfly jigs. My new jig looks like it was attacked by a thousand needles and is deeply pitted. Ed also forgot to mention we managed a nice mess of flounder too.
One other important thing to note is that during our first dive we had two dangerous encounters with sharks. In murky water with <20 of viz sharks seem to be more aggressive. One medium size reef shark came in at Marvin when he was under a ledge wrestling a fish and he never even saw it but thankfully it turned around. More seriously, a large aggressive tiger shark made a run at us when we were on our way up and only a solid jab from a spear tip turned it back. We didn’t have any fish on us since we always float them up on bags so the shark was after us. If you spearfish out there be sure to stay alert.
Cool video. Never seen that. What do you send your go pro to the bottom with? Do you have some sort of contraption that holds it upright like that, or did you rig up something? Do you review the video on the boat? If so, with what?
Those ribbonfish are awesome! Nice jig pic and video. I’ve caught lots of them under dock lights at night in the harbor but didn’t realize they went that far offshore. They make good wahoo bait too!

Realfish01 designed the decent and retrieval system. I use a 4/0 Penn reel on a teaser rod with 200lb power pro in case it hangs up on the bottom (or two decks down in a wreck). The Go Pro has a LED screen accessory so we can see whats on the bottom and the Viz as soon as we pull the camera up.
