Pimlico rail bridge

Anyone know what the height or clearance there is. Planning on running to Charleston from Lake Marion and this is the only area that concerns me.

10ft.

That should be a fun trip!! Back in the day of boat races at Rocks Pond, we used to make the trip in the reverse direction. Watch your path down the cooper before you get to the bridge, real shallow if you leave the channel at low tide…

Thanks to the both of you and yes Pitviper it is a really good time. We have made the trip before but in smaller boats and never really paid much attention to bridge height. Will be the first time in my boat. I will have to measure when I get home today to see if we will fit. We are still trying to decide where to stay when we get to charleston and where to slip the boat. Any recommendations???

Thanks again.

My wife and I took a long boat trip last year, long for an 20’ boat anyway. Clyo,GA on the Savannah River, about 40 miles upriver from Savannah, to Cape Fear, NC and back.

The boat was packed and loaded for a 2 week vacation, got a friend to drop us at the ramp down the road from the house, and we headed down river. Went about 5 miles and came to a dang railroad bridge that we couldn’t quite get under. I’d been under it before, but the river was up now. Sign on the bridge said to call 1-800-outofluck, 24 hours ahead for a bridge opening.

Mrs. Cracker was pretty mad with me. Poor planning! She was right. So I eased up to the bridge and tried to eyeball the clearance. It looked like we could make it if I stripped off the VHF and GPS antennas and the anchor light. So I got out the toolbox and unbolted the mounts, and eased up to it again. Everything cleared except the welded on rod holders. We were still 6" too high.

Mrs. Cracker was not pleased with my planning at all, and letting me know it [:I] She says, well, I guess we have to go back home now. I said nope, I’m getting your grumpy self under this bridge and going to NC. I moved all the dry gear to high ground, pulled all the drain plugs and sunk the boat until we cleared:smiley: Went under the bridge half full of water, put the plugs back in and pumped out the boat. Good to go.

5 miles later we came to another bridge and had to do it again

Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina. Great marina, great hotel, great food. All in one place.

Thanks Larry, That is exactly what I am trying to avoid. I tried the Charleston Harbor Marina but they have a minimum of a two night stay. We are just planning leaving on sat. and coming home sunday. Thanks anyway.

How many hours did it take you to go from GA. to Cape Fear?

If you are tight on clearance schedule an opening & you can make it up there in no time.

Roughly 600 water miles and 30 hours running each way. Took our time, 4 days up, 3 days back. We zigzagged in and out the inlets, ran about half of it inshore and half offshore. Great trip.
