Pimping...and crabbing with......

:smiley::smiley:

Well it’s only fair to turn it around sometimes! Haha

Daddy not LonG ago would have scoffed and gave a little bit of a fight at my antics…now he just laughs and goes right along with it.!! Haha.
So we’ve been looking for “sign” of peelers showing up…when the young virgin crabs back out of their little shells as they grow. They usually show up in Beaufort a week or so before mcclellanville…and there was “word” of it starting…so hopes are up we will have them soon. The process goes fast…and doesn’t last long. Once they start. lWhen it does you have to Work the pots everyday as the other crabs and fish will eat the soft ones. A lot of people think the “soft ones” like the ones you eat are what the crabbers sell…but it’s the ones backing out that are sold and put in tanks…the ones already shed. …Well those Are dinner…or lunch …:stuck_out_tongue:. If you don’t know what to look for…the small “virgin” crabs will turn a darker color then pink on their bottom flap…before the “bust out” of their old shell. They harden pretty fast after they back out…in fact you can put one in a bucket and by the time you get in. They will be harder. In order to catch them we. Do what I call “pimping”. First you close the little escape rings on the sides of th crab pots…something you can only do for peelers as THEY don’t have to be 5 inchs like regular crabs…but make sure you are ONLY keeping ones shedding and can prove that!!. We close daddy’s with plastic zip ties. Then you put. A couple male crabs inside the pot…and a big male in the bait funnel. Now those crazy crabs give me a fit doing this…they grab on to me…the sides…the latch…ME:■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ out their spiny crab elbows…anything to keep from going in…so daddy taught me a trick. He said those crabs are like women…only way you are going to get your way is you have To make them think that going in that funnel (or wh

If you looks at a couple of the pots on the upper right side of the first picture you will see a different looking pot. Small square mesh. Those are true peeler pots. Problem is…at 50 bucks a pot…short season and the fact they don’t last very long at all compared to coated crab wore…daddy Kinda miss it up and uses both.

Penny, I truly love the post you do. Living inland and being a coastal artist you do a great job to jog the mind on the color values I need so much in painting. The crab pots, marsh grass I can honestly feel the salty boat spit on my face.

I am like a lab that loves the water. When we visit the flats the first few seconds I have to smell the marsh and get to the dock or water, check the temps ect. I tell the children I have to fill my gills with the salt air. I worked at Crosbys on Folly in High School cleaning fish and collecting oysters, the marsh was my best friend. You so bring it all back, thanks again for the pictures it helps us inland more than you know!

Got a new boat this year, the last one left me for the last time, so we fired it! Take care and if you see a crazy blonde chick waving like a float queen it’s me!
