I know that there are “crap ton” of mullet running right now, but I do get the occasional pin fish on the line with shrimp. I was wondering if those little guys are worth keeping and using for bait? And if so what fish do I need to use them for? Thanks in advace for y’alls help!

Yes, on the pinfish, they are great for BIG trout, and also work well at the jetties for blues, Tarpon, sharks and kings. If you can keep them alive and get them offshore, they are crack for grouper

The ubiquitous Pinfish bait stealer is a universal food source for fish of all species. Fishing a lively one under a cork has produced memorable catches when other baits weren’t practical. I’ve fished for Snook, Trout and Spotails on the West Coast of Florida with Pinfish for decades, and they always produce. Size does matter, and the ones about silver dollar size seem to work the best…Much bigger and they bring the sharks…too small and they get picked apart. Tough bait too…live good in a bucket or a bait well.

Good info as I too have wondered about pinfish. Hook thru the nose, I assume?

If you get off shore a few miles and like reeling reef donkeys, they like pinfish too. We have been camped over a wreck a few miles out and had ajs killing our pinfish. I just bought a pinfish trap, coming out in Nov. I hope the pins are around then.
please define reef donkeys ha, sounded entertaining

Are those PinFish tarps worth it? Are they an over night turn around or do they fill up quick? And outside of eatting my (**() live shrimps what else will be good for filling them???

im guessing its an overnight thing. Ive always used sabikis tipped with squid to catch them from the boat so Im going to use frozen squid. Ill just use sabikis the first day
The largest creek spottail I have ever caught was 35 1/2 inches using a pinfish for bait.

Caught a 28" Red last weekend on a pinfish.

Pinfish traps are legal to buy, and to be in possession of, but DO NOT let the man in green catch you with live fish in the trap. It will cost you a pretty penny. there is a old law that forbids all types of fish traps except the small minnow traps. Hide it well, and make sure there are no boats around when you check it.

Thank you I did not know that. I will keep that in mind if I even get one now…

I have never heard that about pinfish traps. But its always good to empty the trap with no one else around. I have a friend in FL that has to really hide his trap well and only get in it when no one is around otherwise other fishermen clean him out if they know where it is.
I’ve always done well with the flounder using the smaller ones (in the two inch range). Spots like them, but not as much as mud minnows.
