I’ve had a few people ask me about my recent addition of outriggers to my boat. In the past, I used outrodders which worked ok for my purposes, but it wasn’t until last year when I started playing around with some ideas from Wes of Marsh Tacky Carbon. After a lot of trial and on the water error, I finally came up with an extremely fishable set-up. If anyone would like some specifics I’ll be happy to pass on any information that I can help you with. In the end, it was a no-brainer for me. I fish in my Pioneer in an ocean that maybe I shouldn’t at times, thus the reason for the Marsh Tacky Carbon. I needed the light weight and durability for my boat’s set-up. I’m excited about being able to tuna fish the “right” way now, as well as the other options now available due to the addition to the boat. I only wish I would have done this sooner. Thanks Wes and Marsh Tacky Carbon for all the time and patience it took for me to get the right set-up and rigging. Likethe big jon teaser reels! Do they produce enough drag for umbrella rigs? I am just about to install a set on my rig. I just cant bring myself to spend over a grand for two pancake reels. I could strap two 50 internationals under th0e hard top cheaper than two pancake reels…

Maybe, just maybe a small umbrella rig for stripers, but nothing like what I think you are talking about. I am going to run squid chains or something similar to start with.
The planer reels work for squid chains or other light teasers. It would be very tough to pull even a 4bait dredge on them.
I honestly have not seen one of the reels in person but are they compression drag like a penn downrigger? Could you add a washer to add tension? I amlooking to pull a bar rig with maybe 20 squid (5 rows of 4). Surface skippers!
Sorry to high jack your thread got2go…

The Big Jon reels will hold just as much as 90% of the pancake teaser reels on the market…
Whether or not any of them have the drag to hold what you’re talking about is a different question though!
The issue will not be as much whether the reel will hold it but whether your fairleads or pulleys and how you attach to the outriggers and whether they will hold it. Lots of variables… what weight will you run ahead said bars?
If you’re just going for surface splashing stuff, these reels are going to hold that. If you’re talking about a dredge weight ahead of the bars holding it below the surface at 4-5kts, then you’re going to need to approach this with a dredge rod and doubling system where you have a pulley the dredge line runs through at the dredge weight and then back up to the outrigger to terminate. That allows your reel to be able to move the dredge without you stopping the boat, and it also spreads the load between the outrigger and dredge rod. All the pressure on an outrigger mount OR all the pressure on a standard gunnel rod holder is not a good idea. Splitting it up between the two works very well, though.

I have conventional riggers on my express. I two braces that meet in one spot on the main tube. This spot (7’ from the side of the boat) is where I plan to attach the teaser line with a pully. The umbrella rigs I use are six bar twelve life size bait rigs pulled down with a mann stretch 40. They work great on my extended boom penn down riggers but it takes up a rod holder on each side of the boat and only extends them out about four feet.

The drag system in the big jon reels is a lot like the drag system in a downrigger. You can basically lock them down in the same manner when you want to. There are two other issues, however, that are going to pose a problem for you.
Issue 1. is that the big jon reels have plastic spools while your downrigger has either stainless or glass-reinforced graphite as its spool material I’m sure.
Issue 2. your downriggers have reduction gearing that allow you to crank and move against high resistance while the pancake teasers and planer board reels like big jons have a 1:1 ratio and the handle is simply on the spool itself with no reduction or mechanical leverage in your favor. You will have to stop the boat to move what you’re talking about with a pancake teaser reel I would predict. That’s going to be your biggest issue here.
I would go with a plan C… Plan A was your longer booms running your system off the gunnel. Plan B was using pancake teaser reels. Plan C would be shorter booms and running from them up to a pulley on your riggers and then down to your teaser rigs.
There’s a plan D and beyond if you don’t think that will work, but I know some sportfish captains who like to use a sawed off downrigger on each side of the bridge running to a pulley on the outrigger so that they can move heavy stuff and not worry about an electric cutting off or a levelwind binding on it or anything like that.
On our 19ft cc i took 4 galvanized i bolts and 2 10ft 1 inch schedule 40 pieces of pvc and made riggers. Put rod holders off each side of the T top and cut notches in the pvc so they lock into the rod holders. Zip tied some pullies to the t top and strung them up. Very inexpensive to make and have held up for going on 4 years. Haha

My first big boat , a 23 Seabird, had a pvc/plywood roof that got took out by an oak tree limb…not the water.
where did you get that center console enclosure? I’m looking for something exactly like that on my 202SF.
It’s can be a factory option. I ordered mine for a 197 Islander through Berkeley Outdoors…was told 3 week lead time…that was 9 weeks ago…still waiting…
did they give you a price on that? I got my boat from Berkely and I’m sure they’d be happy to order for me, but just wondering what that runs. I’m guessing at least $600. Or am I way off?
My enclosure was an option. I deal directly with Jack at Pioneer or try to. Pioneer does an outstanding job of taking care of their customers. Really, every year I drive it to Pioneer and drop it off for some TLC. Never disappointed! Also, check the Pioneer Boat Owner site for used stuff and great ideas.
I didn’t mean that in as a negative for Pioneer. I also try to go directly through Pioneer when I can and have been well taken care of. But I wanted these during peak boat show season and those guys run around like chickens with their heads cut off during that time. So I try not to bug them about stuff like that when I know they’re super slammed. After all that’s what the dealers are there for.
When I went to Essenbay a little while back I made sure to browse for anything Pioneer. None at that time. Wish I knew about that before I had paid for mine.

On price, yes, I’ve paid for them. It was $820.90 after tax for all 5 pieces. That’s the 3 enclosure pieces around the windshield plus the two gull wings.
