I say quick because the 4 of us on board limited in less than 15 minutes. I say thorough because the snapper hit the deck of Moncks Corner Marine’s 22 Bay Sport Pioneer absolutely from front to back. We threw back just as many as we kept.
Here’s the story. We left out of the Stono this morning to get on an ocean that was calming down. Swells were out of the S-SW, and they got down as low as a foot before lunch. We got to the first spot reel quick like…
Got everything ready to go and hung the anchor just right on the first attempt. First fish in the boat was a 22" ARS. It continued like clockwork. A few longer and a few shorter. We also got a few triggers and silver snapper on this first spot. I think we released 5 or 6 short ARS. Some were only about 13", and others were 19.75". It was no matter… there were plenty to be had, but we stopped dropping down once we got our 8. Had to leave that spot…
Byebye Mr. Sea Turtle…
I went a little inshore to see if I could luck up and get a poor mouth gag to bite. Didn’t get a grouper bite all day. I put the boat right on top of some extremely pretty grouper bottom and on the edge of grouper bottom and everywhere in between with all sorts of baits. They didn’t want to bite today.
I moved further inshore on top of a big ledge I knew would have blackfish piled up on it. We got set up on it right after a few attempts with the anchor since the wind had changed…
Then, blackfish started coming over the rails. We finally looked at one another and said we had enough fish and it was time to come on in and get everything cleaned up before dark.
What is the Lat. & Long. for said arrrrssssss. Thinking that maybe you might have been fishing someone else’s # and would not want you to get in trouble. So just bring it to the light that you stoled the numbers while fishing with edistofisher.
MCM,
Wish i would have been there. Sorry we could not go on Wens; however, Phin delivered pretty good.
Plenty of snapper in the freezer. I am sure you needed it. It has been too long.

I do not believe Mr. e-fisher has any of these numbers unless he fished with my granddaddy back in the day… Loran numbers are very nice things to leave to your family. You must convert all of your LL numbers to Loran-C so that your descendants will reap the benefits like old Phin can.
You know why we did okay on the snapper today, right? It’s because I wore slickers and white striker boots instead of the crocs. I should have brought the crocs to put on when the grouper wouldn’t bite!
Fishb8, we were in ~110’ for the snapper. They ate squid and cut bait.
Tried the same as well as live bait for the grouper. Not even a bite.
Coming back into the stono this afternoon, the sounder was showing 6’ in the dredged channel. The green #3 can out there in that worst area is not there anymore, and the whole thing was breakers this afternoon… I’m talking 4-5 footers out of the NE breaking around me against an outgoing tide with 6’ depth on the sounder and nothing to do but try and stay on top of a wave and surf it.
Any problem in that stuff would capsize the bote, no question.
They did put a light on the #5 buoy between there and the red folly river entrance buoy though…
I do not think I will run that inlet again on a lower tide because it seems to be filling back in where they dredged.
Do not play around with that inlet! High tide this morning had 13’ minimum depth to the SE of the 2 and 2A red cans (last ones before the stono sea buoy). This afternoon, like I said… it was 6’.

Cough:bull@#@#.
The inlet is fine if you know how to run it. The buoys have been out since the corp dredged many moons. I’m glad y’all made it home safely though. Anytime that the ocean goes from the .5 footers y’all were fishing through to “4-5 footers” in a matter of hours, is to be feared.
Nice guys!! I want to go and do some “cleaning up” with the dive gear before you leave the spot. I will let you get your fix of fishing then I will go down and bring up the stubborn ones.
MCMarine, that purple truck sure looks cute:wink:
You can say what you want about the South, but you never hear of anyone retiring and moving north.

I have been running through there my whole life, and I started running through where they dredged when they moved the buoys. When it was a calm day last summer, I went out there and zig zagged the whole area and taking note of the bottom.
I will try to get a pic posted sometime later with my GPS points and my track yesterday with the 2006 Navionics chart showing, and we can discuss other ways to run the inlet. The depths on the chart are not entirely reliable, but where it shows the shoaling at the end of the chain of cans before the big green sea buoy is generally correct.
Think I will start a separate thread about it with the pic of where I have all the buoys marked and where I try to run the “dredged channel.”
Nice job fellas, but Phin I just want to know one thing… A long time ago when you posted a report where you caught 1 legal red snapper and several undersized and you used the description:
“slammed the American Red Snapper with capital letters, yes.
We caught probably 7 or 8 reds total and only one big boy was a keeper at 18 pounds!”,
And then you went on to say:
“It is not very normal to catch so many genuine american reds in one day of fishing now-a-days, so that’s why I said, “slammed.””
I’m just curious if you finally realized that I was right after all of this time, now that you know what a slam looks like.

Come on now. Is this really necessary? Phin blasted that title to help me out on the web.
I don’t know what skinnee’s deal is lately. Midgie must have gotten his login password or something.
Skinnee, is it normal to limit on snapper or is it abnormal? Is it easier to catch them in good numbers using rod and reel in the summer or winter, generally speaking of course?
I know you will provide me with an objective answer due to your advanced scientific knowledge of groundfish.
Sorry purposeone. I just couldn’t resist a chance to pick at Phin. He has personally fished with you on dozens and dozens of super trips now where you guys have absolutely torn them up and now that he has done it on his own, I just wanted to see if he thought the same. No harm intended.
