Anyone out there own one of these boats? Ridden on one? Fished one? Have experience good and bad with the boats?
Getting rid of the bigger boat in favor of something more family friendly and useable on a daily basis.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Can’t say enough good stuff about pioneer and this hull!
Can you say lifetime warranty?
Console interior is huge with gelcoated everything. Stringer system, bilge, inside hatches- all smooth gelcoat finished. Forepeak storage is gigantic. Boat eats it up like the 22 baysport does, but lots more deadrise at the back too, so handles rough water way better. Before the 22SF came out I used to say I liked to be on the 197SF when it was nasty but the 220 bay when it was just choppy. 222SF gives you both plus tons more storage and family amenities. Dry ride with good handling just like the 197- rides like a bigger boat.
You need to sea trial one to really appreciate them fully.
Selling it outright. Its just not conducive to what I need right now. I need something smaller that I can run the river for a cruise with the family or head out fishing to the deeper wrecks/bottom if I want. Or head off on a pick’em day. I really Hopefully I won’t have too hard of a time getting rid of it since it has relatively new power on the back with less than 200hrs and the full Raymarine electronics package. Add in the hull isn’t one of the Brunswick/Tracker/Bass Pro and there’s already been some interest.

I have yet to see one in person, but the photos I have seen over on the hull truth looked nice.
After owning on of the first runs of the 175 I hope to be able to seriously look at the 222 myself in the future.
The boats are in one word SOLID. Only reason I don’t own one now is I am a broke SOB. The owners are great guys and appreciate their customers!
Never ridden in a 222 but have crawled all over one. One thing that struck me was that it was smaller than the pictures made it look. Very nice boat. I have had two pioneer’s, a 175, and now a Venture 197 and would really like to upgrade to a 222 but the cost seems to be more than I am willing to pay. Was quoted upper 40’s for one with a Yamaha 150 and low 50’s for a one with 250 yamaha motor. Thought that was much to high. Is it just me or have the price of all boats skyrocketed. Quoted 35K for 197 with 150, 38.5K for Key west 211 with Yam 150, 34K for Key West 203 CC with Yam 150.

What’s the problem, the motors on my boat have a NADA value of more than 30K add in the electronics and all the other stuff, its a pretty fair starting point to go from.

My bad, thought you might have been insinuating something. Been on The Hull Truth a little bit lately and can say there’s a lot of assholes on that site.

I have a Pioneer 180 Sportfish and I love my boat!!! Good Clean ride, and well worth the value!!! Also just got a factory installed T-Top on her and its awesome!

You can try to build or rebuild a boat yourself, and after a few weeks of it you will come to understand that a good quality boat is worth every bit of what they cost new. I can look in the guts of some boats and know whether they are over hyped and over priced. I can go offshore in boats that are marketed for offshore used, and I can tell really quickly what’s what when the wind kicks up. I’ve been on a lot of boats that have had various parts of them break offshore. New boats!
Folks my dad’s age tell me it’s because of boats “not being built like they used to be.” Well yeah. There’s also an “up to date way” of doing things and an “old” way. The old way sometimes isn’t best. If old way means attention to detail and the builder actually having some mechanical common sense then the old way is better. Often though, the new way means CHEAPER cost or lighter or even MOST boats produced in a given period of time. I don’t want any of the new way if that’s what a company chooses.
Lots of people can build boats. The hard part is focusing on the things that make a great boat. Not just design or materials or quality. It’s how you view what you produce and what customers really deserve if th
Phin, how far out have you ventured in the 222? How was the fuel burn? Ride? Fishability? How did it handle in slop say compared to the old heavy Mako’s we’re accustomed to? Any warranty issues that you have heard about? I was told by one person they had some finish problems but he was the only one to say something like that. I know they are hard as hell to find used right now.
The more I look at this boat the more I like it. Heck, the wife even asked me to take her back down to look at it again, that says a lot for her to be on board and excited about it. If the ride and price get right, I imagine that my search is going to be pretty close to over. The size is about perfect for our needs and it is a darn good looking boat as well.

Pioneer is built much better than our Makos were. The hulls run differently. Mako’s typically want to run bow high in the ocean and take a little tab or either speed to keep them level where the entry is forward. Our hulls need more power to eat up slop because of either the tabs being down or either more speed to carry the boat more level, but the pioneers will keep level at slower speed. I am sorry if this isn’t making much sense. The pioneers get a lot out of having tabs put on, but I have gone on a lot of offshore trips without tabs on the 197. My 21 Mako, on the other hand, absolutely had to have tabs offshore. I ran it offshore once or twice without tabs and came to the conclusion that doing so would destroy the boat. Put tabs on and problem drastically reduced. Most of the mako’s are like that because their solution to getting wet was to push the rocker area (where water comes up from the running surface) aft so that spray was outrun. You can watch video of my old 21 running and clearly see how dry that boat was. Pioneer has a little different attitude when running. The whole boat is higher in the water and feels more nimble handling wise. Higher in the water doesn’t cost you pounding though. The boat stays level and isn’t launching due to being higher riding in the stern. Fuel, speed and handling are better, and the ride is better in some ways (foot per foot). The pioneers also have a good bit of reverse chine on the outside to shoot that water downwards and keep you dry. The 222 will stay level at slower speeds just like the 197 can without dragging tabs. To put all this another way, I have never felt like a Mako had too much tab. Pioneers, on the other hand, I could feel when they had too much tab. They run higher and more level in the water without the coals being poured on as hard, and they have the stable, heavier feel that our boats have as well. The pioneer hulls are faster also, but that’s just from strake design and wider beam/less deadrise probably. The 222 has more deadrise than my 25 mako and
Im wondering how you would compare the Pioneer 220 Baysport to the Key West 210 Bay Reef?
I have been in both.
210 bay reef is pretty capable offshore/nearshore. I have a buddy who has one with a 225 honda on it, and he has buddy boated with me offshore. Kept up with me okay when I ran a 21 mako and it was a little snotty before. He was a bit wet…
The 220 bay sport is a much heavier boat, and it can run faster offshore IMO. The 220’s I have been on have all had F250’s on them, though, and that will make some difference in how a boat can handle in the ocean. Handling-wise and what they can do in 1-3ft seas, the pioneer is going to eat it up and run faster because of the hull design and weight. Have been caught coming in on all zero’s when a bad storm blew up offshore, and we had to push through about 15 miles of straight northerly green water and white caps. The boat could stay on plane, and we weren’t taking any over the bow. Needless to say, the 220 isn’t really a “bay boat.” It is more of a hybrid I think.
Now inshore, it is more of a matter of layout and storage. They are a little different there. They are built differently as well. I suspect the KW is going to be cheaper. All depends on what you’re looking for out of the boat…
