Pioneer Venture 175 Steering Cable Help Needed

My steering cable appears to be locked up on my 06 Pioneer Venture 175 (with 2-stoke 90 HP Johnson). I am looking to replace it and am wondering about the cost for parts and labor. Anybody have any ideas our would like to do the job is welcome to reply. Thanks, Louie

Back the nut off, undo the nut on the arm, and then take the cable out. Clean out the tube, put new white lithium grease and reinsert cable. Done. If you need to replace the cable take the old one off, measure it and order a new one. Costs around $120-150 for the cable. It may just need to be cleaned.

Thanks for the tip, that could very well work and I am willing to give it a shot. My question is, how would you go about cleaning out the tube, and if the cable is stuck in the tube what would I do?

Do as loopervet says. the end of the steering cable is basically a tube within a tube if that makes sense. Have someone turn the steering wheel, inset a screwdriver or something where the motor steering arm was bolted and tap it while trying to turn the steering wheel. Most of the time it will break loose. The corrosion and grease requirements are between the outer and inner tube.
Good luck !

Use some vise grips to give it a good twist. Disconnect the arm that attaches to the motor and clamp down on the cable with the grips and work the grips up and down to twist the steering rod. 99 times our of 10 this will free it up.

Be careful to grip towards the end to prevent marking up the rod.

Sometimes I put a block on the end and give it a whap with a hammer. You can clean the tube out with a 12 gauge brush, or better a reamer.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I may give that a try before I put it in the shop. I know it will cost an arm and a leg to get someone to do it for me. I am just ready to fish…now! Good luck to all.

The problem you may have is not being able to take the cable all the way out. If that is the case you will need to unbolt the motor to swing it out.
