Fished the Davidson, and some secret wild streams this weekend. All of it was tight pocket fishing. Weather was great, and the fish were there. All fishing was on dry flies. Fished size 16-20 elk hair caddis, p. adams, and blue-wing olive. Hits on all of them.
So my question is- I got good hits on the flies all weekend long, call it 50 total. About 10 times, they took the fly and I could feel them on the line for a couple seconds. But, I didn’t actually get a good hook on a single fish.
I miss fish all the time, but never like this. I’ve fished these same streams/spots and landed fish with the same rod. The only difference is that I switched from a mono to a furled leader. I’m fishing a 6 ft 2 wt with a 3 ft furled leader and I had around 2-3 ft of tippet.
wow. we allways have a summer vacation there fly fishing allways wanted to know what works best and how to fish it. we stay at davidson river campground and normally walk away from the people to fish. whats works best? rod,fly,what part of river?

Check this part of the DRO site for the hatch charts and recent reports. Since the Davidson gets hit really hard and the fish are pretty well trained from all the flies they see, you should use a 5X or smaller tippet. You’re also going to want to use a shorter rod (especially if you go and fish some smaller s

Hurricane, I was trying everything I could think- line tight, strip, rod lift, etc… I guess I will just go up there and try again.
Fishing the Davidson can be maddening. If you go, I always see most people nymphing, so that may work best. However, on Sunday, I got plenty of hits on the dry flies.
stonefly;
If you are missing hook ups, check the fly hook point, you may have a dull point from the rocks,etc…
I used a very light fly rod, very medium action, it did not have the spine to set a short strike. Your line will need to travel a greater distance than you are use to.I have a Scott G series 2wt.,7 1/2 foot. My favorite small stream fly rod is the Scott G series 4 wt 6’ 10 " There is no better rod,(small stream) Today they run a 3wt I think. All top brands should have a similar rod. Talk to Davidson River Outfitters for Local tips. They realy know current month & happenings(Brevard,NC)
good luck
Cheap flies use cheap hooks, I lost a lot of fish to learn that point ! That trophy fish will bend your hook and you will never know it. Use any of the name brand hook makers.
