I am in the process of redoing my console (adding and relocating gauges) and am putting in a speedometer. My question is where to install the pitot tube on the transom. I have a depth/fishfinder and the transducer is on one side of the transom with the speedwheel on the other side (see pics)Can anyone out there tell me where I can put the pitot tube where it will work properly?
I have seen it mounted on boats almost as far to the outside as the chine, and the gauge showed close to the GPS speed over ground. As long as an inch or so of the tip of the plastic is hitting water flowing under the boat, it should work fairly well. You just don’t want to obstruct the flow of water ahead of your motor or transducer. See what the speedo’s installation instructions say.
I am running a 2-stroke 70 hp yamaha. I get your point about the fishfinder providing me speed info. It has been acting kinda hinky lately. Quite honestly I got such a good deal on the speedo when I bough the other gauges and aesthetically the console looks better with the speedo on there. As long as it is there, I would like for it to work.
Unless I’m badly mistaken, that engine has an existing rubber hose for the factory speedo pickup. Probably stuck back into the area just below the tilt tube some place and plugged off. You might be able to tap into that existing line.
Cool, I’ll check that out. Thanks Hey, does anyone out there know if this is the case, does a 2-stroke 70 Hp (70-TLRB) Yamaha have a factory installed tube for a speedo?
