Having had moderate success (and ALOT of fun) on Friday in pursuit of the personally elusive 40" red, thought it would be fun to take the family out for a similar attempt. Well…
Couldn’t find bait. Where mullet was galore, mullet was no more. Tried 3 different places, slinging my tail off, with only 2 pin fish and a baby flounder to show for it.
Ate up too much time, too much tide, and decided to go to plan G - inshore fishing. First stop, notta. Also a great deal of time re-rigging and regrouping for inshore. Momma patient, kids bored, Daddy frustrated.
Figured try one more spot near the landing then bag the day. GOOD decision! Wound up catching around 20 trout and 5 reds. My son was fisherman of the day, bagging a good many of them, and was a trooper for hanging in on what looked like an awful day. Dad was proud!
Daughter stole the show, though! Caught only one fish, a 27" red on topwater about an hour after Dad showed her how to “walk the dog”. Lured it, got the blow up, waited, and siezed the moment! VERY proud of her!
What could have been an awful day turned out awful good! Props to Momma, too, for keeping kids fed, Daddy calm, and day rolling!
All fish caught towards end of rising tide on you name it - mud minnows, jigs, popping cork, and topwater. Fish hugging, and I mean HUGGING, the grass line.
Got caught with our pants down (or shorts up?) fishing a tourney in that UGLY August cold snap. NOT today!
Itsy bitsy flounder. Count towards the slam?
First fish, stinkray caught on artie. Not an optomistic start.
Uh ohh…
She shoots, she SCOOOOOORES! Megan using her 15 minute
Nice. Congrats to the young un on that top water!! If that her first top water red it will change fishing for ever for her. For the best but forever. Sometimes that one spot or few mins of right tide is the day maker. You’ll get that 40" next time. It’s better to keep the kids interested than worry about attaining personal goals anyway. Good job. One question though. You lip speckled trout! How do you not cut your fingers all up?

I figure fair game. I jacked him in the lip, he can jack my thumb. Fairs fair:smiley:.
Personal goal, yes, but knew we’d catch someting BIG, and wanted them to enjoy it also!

Good luck on bull reds, I know it will be a thrill all of you. I may have to try lipping a trout next time i catch one! After all, like you said: Fair is fair.

Way to go Megan! Though the day did not go as you had planned, looks like it was salvaged in a very good way. Keep looking for that 40, you’re gonna get it!
