planer board help!

guys… i’m looking at scoring some new planer boards in the next couple weeks. how about some tips? i’ve only seen them fished 2 or 3 times. are all brands pretty much the same? do some work better than others? any experiences/tips/help greatly appreciated!

phish get the ones richard sells at lake world.they are called water bugzz.25 a pair.i have 4 pair and will not buy any other ones.they pull great and are very light.if you want to try mine just let me know.do not buy the yellow birds you will not be happy with them.

what sharky said. don’t clip the line in past halfway on the pads.

checked them out online. those look good, nice and light.

what about drag settings and hook set? do you have to change any tactics from down rod fishing?

i don’t change anything.you don’t need weights.if you decide to run a weight don’t use more than 1/8 ounce.just buy 2 rods and keep them for planer boards or freeline.use a 4ft leader then swivel and a bead.the bead will keep the board from sliding to the hook when released.12lb line is what i use on 8ft rods for planers.when setting them out.the first one will get moved foward so the next one don’t get tangled in it.assuming that you run more than 2.

our boats are basically the same.i can run 4 planers,2 feelines and 4 down rods easy.i can make you a bar like i have in mine if you want one.you’ll have to buy the rod holders though.

sharky,

you got a picture of the bar and rod holders?

no but i can get some.i just took a piece of conduit measured the width i wanted bent 2 90s on it.i bought the rod holder basis at hardware house in lexington.it’s very simple to make.the mounting brackets were part of an bow rail that came off a boat that i junked.

im trying to figure out how to get both sides of the bar ot fit in the flush mount rodholders on the back of my boat so i dont have to screw anything into the gunnels. if i used a piece of pipe or conduit i could just bend it where it would fit into the rodholders.

got it…thanks. we’re working on logistics.

i scored a couple sets of the water bugz planer boards. man… those things are sweet. i did have issue with the clip holding the line too tight. seems like it’s tighter the closer i put the line towards the end. thoughts? should i err on the side of not clipping the line enough? rather than have it not release when there’s a fish?

it will wear down a little bit.clip the line about 1/8-1/4 in.

that’s about what i was doing. i would imagine when a decent sized striper hits it, it’ll release.

do you run yours on heavier line than normal?

hey guys,
If you will notice on your line release clips, behind the line pads, there is a small coil spring. This spring fits in a small slot approximately 1/4 inch long. If you will take a small screwdriver, and push the spring towards the planerboard you will cut the line tension approximately in half. good fishin… see ya on hartwell!
