Planer Board Question

I am looking to get into Kingfishing this year. Upon reading about rigs and set ups, there is discussions about planer boards. The question is, “Would a trolling weight be just as effective?”

Most people dont use planers or inline weights for king fishing. This is mostly due to their slashing type of strike which leads to a hook up not exactly in their mouth all the time. Light drags and limber rods also keep live baits alive longer. This is for live bait, you could drag ballyhoo on planers or cigar weights and probably still catch some fish.

run it get a few in different sizes.

This is a small side planer board. It pulls the line off to the side like outriggers normally would. The down planers are effective but sometimes difficult to use. If there is a big swell you have to keep the drag locked down so the planer doesn’t pull all your line out.

We use a lot of plainer board striper fishing in the lakes upstate and do quite well! You can run as many as you can handle, but I have found when the fish are reely biteing it is useless to run over 4.
We use live herring or gizzard shad freelined back about 15/20’behind boards and boards back from boat 75/125’ stacked. They come as port and starboard and pull out farther the faster you pull. We use our elect motors at around 1 kt or less, takes some practice but it is effective. I might try some for red and trout at the coast some time.
I make my own using noodles and fiber glass board.
