Planer rod line question

So planer bridal setup on a short bent butt…what do you use for line? Do you use straight braid or straight hollow core or mono? Or due you topshot the reel and how do you do it?

How large of a reel are you pulling ??

Most of your 50s will handle it but eventually it will stress the drag washers.

50 or 80lb mono line will hold the pressure of any small inline planers.

I am seeing braid backing on a lot of the reels coming through the shop lately. It will save you money overtime but the upfront cost is substantial.

Some of the Shimano 50s have 80 class drag washers that can also assist with over lining the reel.

You asked about hollowcore vs regular braid ?? You can still attach the mono to a regular braid using a triple loop to loop connection by spider hitch or bimini twist.

So 50 or 80lb mono will accomplish your inline planer application with a bridal. Braid would just provide you more capacity.

I have two reels to accomplish this setup a Penn international 50 VSW or I can use the 50 VSX. I’m not sure how far a bridal setup is run back and the vsw hold way more line but I want to get this right off the get go cause of the cost of line. So reel reel is backed by braid with a topshot of mono and the bridal then is attached to the mono? The rod is a short bent butt 100# roller w/swivel end

Just trying to get my.plan together before I get back. Deployed with military and arrive back in April. So fishing will be in full swing.

Use the VSX, it puts out more drag.

Back with braid and roll with it.

The planer bridal is attached to the under line with crimp or loop to loop with 30 yds of mono or more depending on how far you want the hook from the planer.

Just for another perspective:

I picked up an aged 50w international 2-speed (low gear makes it easier to pull in planer without having to stop the boat if you can’t trip the planer) and spooled it 4/5 of the way with 80lb moss green power pro braid and put it on a PJ Wholesale 5’ bent butt. Bought a 25’, 150lb wind-on momoi leader to use as a topshot also to give a little cushion at strike due to high drag to hold the planer trolling 6-7knts. Tie a bimini in the braid and use a loop2loop (catspaw) connection for the topshot. Crimp the end of the topshot to your wind-on bridle and then crimp your 25-50’ (depends on the planer and weight of bait, too much leader after the planer will trip the planer) of leader. Makes the entire setup wind-on down to the bait. Great especially for wahoo if you never have to touch the leader which will wake a fish up or change the angle of the hook and increase your chances of losing a fish boatside. This also helps when clearing lines.

We like to deep drop at the end of the day and rigging with a short topshot like that to the wind-on bridle allows me to clip at the bridle, wind up bridle an leader and put away and quickly crimp/tie to a snap swivel to hook up our deep drop rig. If you want to switch back its only a cut and crimp and you’re good to go.

Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

I have only seen 1 offshore gold trolling reel in 4 years with striped out gears.

100% due to overlining and no topshot.

The reel had 130lb Diamond Braid with a very tiny leader on a Tiagra 50, Shimano warrantied the reel no questions.

Any reason for a short bent butt? I’ve always used long butts and have had one of the first Avet 50w in this area as my planer rod…it’s only been serviced once (last year) and nothing out of ordinary was wrong with it. A little leery of what the spool looks like, though, as the JB 130 on it has been on it forever (well, since about 2009ish when I sold my Kristal loaded with it that I took off to put on this reel).

By the way, my bridle is hooked to my solid core JB via Bimini (loop to loop) towards reel and a Spro 240lb swivel rigged to mono shock leader…started with a Crowder rod with just swivel tip but have gone to a short rod with all ball bearing rollers with plenty of clearance on them. Works very well for us.

Glad to hear that for a 50 VSX planer reel what’s the recommended line setup for that? Do you spool XX# mono on first then top it with hollowcore? In regards tot he bridal does it need to be attached to mono or the braid?

The Short Bent Butt is easily fought with a fighting belt if necessary and matches up to most center consoles.

Braid then mono top shot in most situations.

I have seen a solid braid filled reel attached to the bridal then to mono in the front. In all depends on how much money you want to spend on line, they will both work.

You technically don’t need any braid, BUT with the 50 VSX it will definitely improve your capacity.
