Planer Rod Setup

I READ OLD SALTYPLANNER 3 RUNNERS 85FT DEEP IF IT TRUE HOW DO THEY MAKE IT DO, THAT AND WHAT SPEED

Not sure but Old Salty definitely the way to go. Runs deep and consistently trips when you need it to.

Avet 50/2 + spectra. Nothing special needed except shock leader, bridle and wind on guides on the rod. Then, you’ve got the easiest, lightest, most versatile setup. Do you guys know what a 9/0 or 12/0 senator weighs? Seriously…

You will want a 12/0 senator rather than a 9/0 if setting up a dedicated planer rod with a senator.

You can get more out of the 9/0 by not spooling it but half way full of line. Again… spectra gives you what mono cannot.

If you want to run a big planer without all sorts of special stuff, then all you need is a 100lb spro in line at about 1.5x the length from the planer bridle than the depth you want the planer running at. Let the bait and planer down until the spro comes out the rod tip and tie a short piece of 30-40lb mono from the spro to your transom cleat or the reel’s rod clamp. Leave your reel on 12-15lb of drag and let the fish break the 30-40lb tether when it strikes…

If you don’t have a rod with big enough guides for swivels to wind thru them you can simply cleat 300lb mono to the transom, run the planer off that and use shower curtain rings and thick rubber bands.

Here are some pics of my setup with the bridal.

That’s pretty work-

and the LRSA shimanos will get it done just like a 50/2 Avet or Penn 50VSX

Make sure someone’s within reach of this setup when it’s working. You will get break offs / pulled hooks if the drag isn’t pulled back ASAP when a fish is hooked.

thats (**() sexy right there…

1 more thought paint the planer black, lots of toothy fish love shiny things…it sucks to watch a Mako doing back flips with your planer in his jaw.

Gut wrench,

Thanks, Iv switched to the old salt planers since these pictures. The bridal system is so simple and clean. I like the idea of painting them black. Do you know of any kind of rubberized coating you could heat up and dip them in so they have a protective barrier? The only thing that suck is when you have a fish on and the planer gets to the boat, usually everyone is excited and who ever takes it off just throws it to the side making it easy to scratch stuff up.

i sand blasted mine and then just painted with some black spray paint,i bet the undercoating paint would work or even bed liner paint?

the painted planer got ate too but it did last longer than the unpainted,i am redoing 2 #16 old salty’s now for spring trolling,i may even paint 1 red just to be different…

Joel, remember i always keep buckets of fresh water on port and starboard at the transom to drop planers and trolling weights into. of as well as to rinse my hands off. Let me know if you want me to make you some more wind-on bridles. For those wanting to paint their planers, just scuff them up, wipe with acetone or denatured alcohol, then spray with self-etch primer and paint flat black. Guys keep in mind you can use the same bridle set-up for heavy trolling weights also as it makes it easier to just reel up to the weight, unsnap the weight as the captain gives it a little more throttle to keep tension on the fish while you are taking the weight off. then simply reeel right up to the fish to be leadered, it saves a lot of handlining. Old Salty planers are definitely easier to trip as the weight distribution is different by being farther forward compared to Sea Striker Brand of planers.

THANKS FOR PICTURES THAT HOW I DID MINE BUT I DONT HAVE PLANNER ROD JUST GOING RUN NUMBER 3 SALTYPLANNER IT GOES DEEPER THAN 3LB TROLLING WEIGHT

Remember that rubberized undercoating never truly hardens, and is more of a tar-based substance rather than pure rubber. My friend had to learn this the hard way. SEM and Marhyde make a rubberized rocker panel spray that comes in an aeresol can used for the textured splashguards and rocker panels on vehicles.

Not sure why wire line has not been mentioned with a planner if you are trying to get the line down deep. I have a Penn 6/0 with wire line and very little backing on it. I have no problem pulling a #4 planner up to 5 to 6 knots. My guess it will be down around 90 to 100’. I know the wire is not sporting but it will put fish in the boat. I have not used it much since I got the down riggers. The main problem I found with the wire line is it HEAVY setup and have to tighten the drag to almost max. pressure.

I have never tried the bridal setup. Looks interesting.

Back to the downriggers, I use either a 8 or 10 pound ball on one and a Z-wing on the other. Never bring them up to change baits, just slide a double snap swivel down the line. I might end up with 6 to 8 swivels down there before bringing the ball or wing up. BTW, I will catch more fish on the wing.

the problem with running straight wire line and other monel/stainless wire off the reel is kinking problems. I generally use a no 16 or 24 or even a larger planer depending on which baits i pull. I like to pull hrse ballyhoo as well as a lot of split-tail large mullets at about 10-14" in length with a chin weight or swimming spanish mackeral. If you ever try the bridle system i am sure you won’t go back to the old way. A major problem with running down riggers and just transom clet-off planers is it does not allow you to drop back to the fish, as you know the wahoo don’t alwahit the bait haed enough to pop the clip and simply cut the tail of the bait off in one bite. With the bridle set-up you get to see the planer rod tip bounce and you can simply freespool back to the fish. also if yo want to check your bait all you have to do is to throw the lever drag drown into freespool for 2 seconds and then back up to strike and the planer will trip, come to the surface and u can then reel in the bait. with a inline planer you have do the the old trick of pulling back on the rod and snapping it forward to get the planer to trip and then u still have to handline the leader that is attached to the planer. I have tried all of these methods and the bridle system is by far the easiest.

Here ia a video of the planer rod in action, watch the second bite series on this clip and you will see the planer being unclipped from the bridle and then the fish reeled straight to the leader and gaffed. I no longer use mono bridles, I build my own with wind-on needles, serving thread and 200@ jerry Brown hollow core. This makes for a much cleaner set-up.

nice video, i’ll second that the bridle planer rig is the best way for your down bait.
