Planer Rod Setup

yall think a 9/0 Senator will hold a #5 planer at 6-7 knots? it is listed as 23 lbs of drag max, what yall think?

My 9/0 with extra drag washers will just barely hold a #4 into a strong current.

NOPE!! Get you a 12/0. Or go HOLTON style and get a Penn 70VS.

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

thats what i figured. 12/0 it is

12 or fish a smaller planer, both works

It certainly isn’t impossible, but it’s a pain in the rear to trip a planer under power with a star drag reel. You’ll have to trip it with the rod. If you use a lever drag (preferably a Tiagra 80), you can trip the planer very easily…and SAFELY!

My recommendation if possible is to make a planer kit and pull from the transom cleat. Using rubber bands and your imagination of cheap clips (paper clips, snap swivels (not cheap), twist ties, etc.) to attach to the planer line (300 - 400 lb mono). Planers put a lot of unnecessary strain on the rod, line, reel and rod holder.

yea thats what i do now (cleat them off and shower curtain rings w/ rubber bands), i wanted a second thats on a rod for when i run two planers when lookin for wahoo. i run a #16 and a #5 off my tow hooks. a lot of metal and line in the water, kinda a pain in the ass when clearing lines. Plus a planer rod sounds good on paper. anyways, i’m just gonna hook up the #5 on a downrigger with 200 lb braided. thanks for the help yall.

I run a planer off my down rigger. It works well, and you can clear it very easy…

Miss Amanda or anyone else,
I like the idea of the ease to clear lines with the planer on the downrigger; however, I have never run like that.

What is the advantage of using a planer on the downrigger vs. 5 - 10 lb weight?

Z Wing off a cleat or a downrigger is the solution to getting bait to the desired depth

I use a 3 or a 4 on my 9/0 planner rod set up and it does fine. Have pulled it at 9 knots

Local Boy, Just having fun.

If you guys are just running small planers, then a dedicated rod might be overkill. I’m used to running 16, 24, and sometimes even 32 planers.

Do whatever you’re comfortable with…just get a line deep!

same for us…

i added a tiburon handle and it really a nice setup…

What size planner and downriggers,

For those considering using a dedicated planner rod keep in mind the 60 ft flouracarbon leader that must be cleared, real pain on small boat’s. Also the Old Salty’s are easier to trip.

Use a clip off planer system (some call it a “bridle”) and you can reel that long leader right onto the rod with zero handlining. I know folks who use up to 150’ of leader behind a planer with this system. That’s a bit overkill to me, but with the right gear it’s no problem.

I have been using a #5 planer on my Scotty 1085 Strongarm 30. It is a cheap and small downrigger, but it works for me, and it fits great on my tiny boat…

Its got nothing to do with brand, but I do use old salty. Its the angle of dangle that makes them easier or harder to trip. If you have one tripping too much, bend the rod in. If you want it easier to trip then bend as shown.

I Just bought a #6 Planer, and hope to try it soon, gonna try the shower rings and line clip release deal. Any tips?? Will the shower ring just slide all the way down easily or what? and I am kinda hearing from some of you i need larger than 150 mono to cleat to the boat. Last question…why a planer off the downrigger?? Cant you just let the ball down to desired depth???

Sure, you can let the ball down. When the release clip releases due to a fish or whatever, you can reel it up, reset it, let it back down and repeat as often as needed. Or, you can use the shower rings and bands, and then reel it(ball or planer) up once, at the end of the trip, unless you need to bring it up earlier for clearing reasons. I have used the ball before a bunch, but I personally like the shower ring/planer setup better. Of course, I could just attach it to the back of the boat, but I have a DR, so I use it. If you have to bring up the planer for some reason, it makes it a lot easier…
