hey guys, im trying to plan a spring fishing trip in the upstate area. want to go wade the mountain streams and fish for trout, rainbows, browns and brookies. anybody have any ideas where i can park a pop-up or pitch a tent for a weekend and walk to the fishing spots.
thanks in advance.
Here’s a place that we stayed last spring up in Marion, NC. It’s a place called Mountain Stream RV Park, (mountainstreamrvpark.com) it’s a wonderful little campground with all facilities, and there’s a great trout stream that borders the campground (Buck Creek). You can literally step out of your camper and walk down into the creek. Also up in Spruce Pine (about 10 miles) you can go up to the gem mine and pan for gems in the creeks up there. My wife found a Mystic Topaz that after we took it to the lapidary down the road from the mine (the guy was featured on one of the History channel shows) turned out to be a 5 ct. stone that was appraised for $2400.00. We took it to a jeweler and had it set in a ring setting that she wears everday.
We also found several 3+ ct. garnets that were appraised at $1400.00 each, a star saphire that that appraised for in excess of $1500.00 and a rare NC emerald that we had cut into a radiant cut that we mounted in a pendant and gave to our daughter for her wedding. (all in one day)
If you’ve got kids it’s a great, inexpensive way to spend the day and the kids love digging around in the dirt and mud and one stone that you find could pay for the whole trip.

thanks for the info.
i stayed up in Helen Ga. for a week early this summer (Timeshare). It was great there, on the stream, and you could fish pretty much anywhere along the river in the town limits. Asked a local guide and found some other spots upstream and a lake in a nearby park. Caught a handful of trout but all small. I did get to see a few keepers caught by other ppl.
I was hoping to stay on the SC side, and find a spot downstream of the spring stocking, but i will move into NC if i find the right spot.
Oconee SP up hwy28 above Walhalla. Just down the road from trout hatchery, Chattooga River, and East Fork Creek.

Oconee SP up hwy28 above Walhalla. Just down the road from trout hatchery, Chattoogga River, and East Fork Creek.
Also go to Saluda River TU website and check out the links. There is a Chattogga chapter and link as well to other spots between Hwy 11 and Brevard, Mills R etc…

There’s a primitive campground on the Chauga River in Oconee County just off hwy. 28. It may be listed in the DNR regs. book? I’ve fished that stretch with good success several times. You can also drive down river to a parking area with more good fishing, or drive even further to Spider Valley. It’s hard driving in (4WD a must), or an easy walk in, but a tough uphill walk out!! If you’re interested, I’ve always wanted to fish the Chauga from the parking area down to Spider Valley? I’m sure it would be day trip, but some prime unfished areas along the way.
One of the guys working for me killed a big Rattler (13 buttons) under the bridge pilings last year, so watch it!!
EDIT; If I remember correctly, these campgrounds are only open certain times, so you might want to plan your trip accordingly. Seeya, Scott

it’s not a far drive from burrells ford rd. from what i can tell, there are trails stretching from Ellicott Rock all the way down to Russell Bridge, on the Chattooga, found a great map. now i’m ready for May to get here so i can do this trip.
Been there a bunch in my younger days. This is what you are looking for.
Cherry Hill is nice but just no elec. Just water and showers and nice camp spots. Hard to beat for $10/night. There is nice trail from Hatchery down to river along East Fork Cr. Caught brooks and rainbows there. They stock it. Primitive camping down Burrells Ford road. 1/2 mile hike in. Camp spots, water well, outhouses. But, its on the creek or the river - pends which part you go to. Bigger fish in river but, more pressure and harder to catch.
