Planting Food Plots

I left about 5 gallons of sweat out there. I was going to use the headlights on the tractor to finish those rocks, but a bad thunder storm popped up right at dark. Wasn’t going to do that in the lightening though :)…and it was popping all over. On the plus side, the seed got a soaking right after being planted. As long as the deer don’t bother them too much, they should to be up going by this coming weekend.

He is a machine. Once you turn him on he never stops working. I hope he brings me the luck that he had last year. I am adding 4 new stands this year.
Thanks Skeeter. You the man:smiley:

Here is one of the three plots I planted on Partners-ship’s place just Saturday. I’m sure they will be over knee high by Aug 15th. Right about the time the farmers get all the stuff out of the fields near his place. If he don’t kill some nice deer this season, he is the worst deer hunter on the planet.

Skeet
I am going up Monday to install the blind at end of food plot as you suggested. So… If I don’t get a big one this year it will be your fault:smiley:

Oh no…ha,ha. I did my part. All you gotta do now is pour the corn to them and play the wind right. your food plots ought to be really jumping by this weekend. Send me some pics of the growth progress if you don’t mind. Just a suggestion…you will probably get more deer on your #3 spot if you take that feeder out and just pour corn on the ground where the feeder is standing. Your deer are not trained on feeders, and it takes a long time to get them used to those noisy things. Does usually warm up to them pretty quick, but those weary bucks shy away from them.

The Egyptian Wheat should get at least 7 feet tall on either side of the Iron Clay Peas. I planted the peas last Friday:

skeeter; Glyphosphate is the chemical name for what you know as Round-up. roundup went off patent almost over 20 years ago and now you can buy glypho everywhere. do not spend your money on the name brand. also; make sure that you buy the 41% active with 15% surfactant in it. i have sold this product along with many other herbicides and fungicides for over 35 years. tractor supply is a good source for a 2 1/2 gal jug of this. good luck. also… more is not better. best to go by the label directions.

also; in response to how long before you can plant after using this product. no problem to plant 6-7 days later. glypho dissapates when it hits the soil. also remmeber; it will only work on things that are green and growing.

Looking really good skeeter.

You will never, ever ever see a cowpea at Ray’s place over 3 inches high. There will be a beautiful patch of weeds there. And he has peanuts on one side, soybeans on one and corn on the other, plenty for the deer to eat. Ax me how I know…

Wrong. Here is the proof:

His second plot:

OBVIOUSLY, they are more than 3 inches tall, and they are doing great with no weeds in sight. And, obviously, you don’t know because the pictures prove you 100% wrong.

I don’t know what that is.

Again, to each his own, just don't tell someone they're doing it wrong, if you have no clue what something is. I am pleased you have no weeds, less of a hassle to deal with.

I never stated anyone was doing it wrong. You made that up out of thin air. I only stated what has been successful for me. I’m sure he can make up his own mind on how he wants to do his plot, and in fact, he has because he posted a pic of his plot.

I like being proved wrong, depredation permits do Infact work then.

And for comparison, peanuts right down the rd, 2 miles, this field will be a total loss and it isn’t a food plot…

now Salty, what’s the benefit of having a clean field like you have here?

The pic didn’t post where I can see it. I had that trouble the first time I tried to post pics of the peas. Anyhow, I think you are right about depredation tags, but at the same time, I think his peas are surviving because of two things: (1) depredation tags and (2) the massive food supply you cited (the fields). When those fields are harvested, his peas will likely get plenty of action then. At that point, the peas should be able to sustain the browse pressure to some extent.

The deer can see the peanuts better so as to destroy them completely. And next year we won’t have any new pig weed seed. That’s in addition to proper stewardship of course.

I will add skeeter that I wasn’t aware of your original post of a 7/16 planting date. We had 1.8" that night and those peas caught it just right in that hole, perfect timing.

Agreed. We need rain soon, real soon.
