Plastic garbage in our waters, and shores

An interesting link to an article. We should all be aware. Maybe one day the Coffee K-cup’s, so called “disposable” plastic water bottle’s and all the other plastic entities that are used for the sake of convenience will be better regulated. That would be one regulation I would ok with

On a local level, the worst example of this is the upper Ashley river. I organize an annual cleanup with Summerville Saltwater Anglers and last year we removed 11.5 tons of mostly plastic trash from the river and marsh up there. This is not people throwing trash off their boats. Its coming from people throwing trash along the roadside ditches. When it rains or worse yet, a 1000 year flood or hurricane, guess where it all goes? The Ashley is a long tidal river and does not flush itself. So the trash stays.

I’ll be picking a date for the 2017 event in the next week or so. I hope you will consider helping us this year. Last year we had 150 people from all across the state participate.

Optiker, i think it’s awesome that you guys do the cleanup on the Ashley. I plan on participating next time. It’s sad to see all the trash in the rivers around here. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve turned to boat around to go pick up some trash that I see floating down the river. I have filled an entire trash bag a few times just on an evening boat ride. Very sad to see.

I find “us” fisherperson’s are the real culprit.

I lost count on the number of Gulp bags/containers I have found, scented squid containers, monofilment line wraps, empty leader spools, etc. at some of the local fishing holes.

What really pisses me off is the monofilment line recycling tubes filled with regular trash yet clearly marked MONO LINE ONLY. That also means NO BRAID. Braid gets wrapped up in a circle, pinched the loop into a firgure eight, cut the end loops with sissor or ceramic knife (awsome to cut braid, won’t corrode like stainless/carbon steel), dispose in REGULAR HOUSEHOLD TRASH.

Wow! Plastic disintegrating down to microscopic size and absorbing into the food chain. What a mess! Please practice “Carry in, Carry out!”

Please keep us posted on the date for the Ashley river clean up, i know 4 or 5 boats we could get a couple people on each to come give a hand.

I usually only get to fish one day a week due to work and probably for a year straight i have been able to fill up a large trash bag every time i go. And thats just going to my fishing holes and back to the ramp, not looking around for it.

Im a firm believer in leaving something you use cleaner than you found it, and i want my kids great great grandkids to be able to catch fish in the same spots i do. Only way to do that is to take care of it in our lifetime and instill it in the future.

Look at where Jesus went to pick people. He didn’t go to the colleges; he got guys off the fishing docks.

This kind of stuff realllllly pisses me off, sheer carelessness.

Check this out. Hope it works.

Please pencil in Saturday, February 11 for this year’s Ashley River Cleanup. Tentative date, but likely to be the one. Thanks and more to come…
