The weatherman was calling for it to REALLY blow yesterday. “20-30 w/gusts to 40”…he said. Well, it did blow a little yesterday but nothing close to what was forecasted…and were we glad the weatherman was wrong.
Apparently a lot of people heeded the word of the weatherman and stayed in bed Saturday morning because when we got to Remley’s, there was maybe six trucks w/trailers in the parking lot when we got there just after sunrise. The NNE wind was a bit chilly in the morning but a jacket and some shorts was all we needed. We splashed the boat and off we went.
The day was kicked off on the right foot. While slowly hopping a shrimp po’boy TT on a gold TE jig, that highly sought after “THUMP” came shooting up my line and down through my ALX BOKU rod. I set the hook and immediately knew our finned friend had some shoulders. Seconds later, the net lifted a beautiful 18" flounder into the boat. I say “beautiful” because it was honestly the most beautifully marked flounder I had ever caught. Dark brown/black body with medium and light brown spots all over it. Sadly, for the flounder, this beauty was introduce to a saltwater/ice bath inside of my livewell and got a free ride back to Lexington. We pressed on in search of other finned participants…and a little refuge from the stiffening winds. We ran to some secluded backwater and began fishing the tide out of the creek. This is when it got good. It seemed lie every finger mullet in the Wando was in this creek. I was actually worried we might have to too much competition with all of the bait we were seeing. We hopped and ragged all sorts of bottom bouncing baits on Trout Eye jigs but was only getting bites (and missing fish) but no hook ups. I didn’t see any fish feeding on the surface but I couldn’t help but throw topwater baits…with zero success. The two most productive baits were a DOA Aihead on a weighted hook under a DOA popping cork and my absolute favorite hollow belly swimbait on a weighted Gamakatsu swimbait hook. The trout were hitting the DOA A
Walked on the pier and it was definitely in the mid 20’s you probably where just in a good area where the wind was obstructed somewhere up wind. My house is usually windy on a calm day but wasn’t really windy. The folly river had one foot white caps and it is usually flat. The wind was blowing down the coast line so if you where inland up the wando it was likely lesser for that reason. None the less good job and this further entices me to want to throw swim baits, not really an arti guy though.

Just re-read my post…sorry for all of the type-o’s. We fished last couple hours of outgoing, all the way up to the first couple hours of incoming.
Anyway, the creek we were in was definitely seclude (aside from a few stretches) but the Wando runs from northeast to southwest so the wind was blowing straight down the pipe. No refuge on the main river at all, especially right there at Remley’s. At that point in the Wando, there really isn’t a “good area.”
What can I say, PeaPod, I like what I like. I could’ve went REALLY overboard and said the swimbait is a 3.5" Strike King Shadalicious, my line is Sunline SX1 braid in 12lb test, my reel was a Quantum Smoke Inshore (30 size), and all of this gear was bought at PSA in Mt Pleasant. Lol!!!

more product placement in here than a NASCAR interview
Hahaha!
Also, I went out the jetties that day past R14. I can assure you it was blowing more than 25. It must have been sheltered inland, but it was nasty with 6 footers or better past the jetty mouth. we pounded countless times in a 31’ sailboat which is hard to do. must have been pretty sheltered in whichever creek/river you were in, glad you managed to escape the wind and catch the fish. So did you let all those trouts go? I’m a sucker for pecan encrusted trout.
Only a dink trout, a small sheep, and a few pinfish for my efforts today.
Little bit of difference between fishing the Wando on a windy day and fishing the jetties on a windy day. HaHa!! Either way, it didn’t hit the forecasted wind speeds, which we were greatful for. Funny how a fishing report turned into whether the wind was blowing hard or not. I’ll have to remember to bring my anemometer next time. Lol!!
Whole fried flounder w/sweet Thai chili sauce was on the menu that night.

The smoke is a nice real, I’ve thought about getting one. Do you ever throw any large swim baits, if so does it drastically reduce the bite? Is the sunline good braid, how does it compare to PP? Do you ever have problem with lighter braids pulling loops off your spool, I recently dropped down to 10 from 15 and I don’t know if it is the new brand or the new # size but it has been giving me problems since a full spool and I am down to half spool and still gives me problems, but I do like the increase feel that gives me a more a detailed mental image of what I think the bottom is like. Shamefully I have not mad it over to PSA I have heard it is a nice store.
You mentioned an airhead on weighted hook. Did you use a trout eye or a weighted gami? I have been experimenting with different plastics under a cork. I was throwing the VUDU a lot this weekend and nothing on some nice clear water off points and nada… Sunday night the wind laid down real nice and still nada.

Yeah, I’ve been a Quantum fan forever. It was the first baitcaster I ever learned to throw when I was 10 and I just stuck with them. Fresh, Salt, spinning, baitcasting…they’re the only reels I use. If I’m seeing bigger bait in an area, i will definitely throw larger swimbaits (any bait for that matter). The 3.5" is my “catcher” because big and small fish will eat it but when I’m looking for a bigger fish or i’m seeing bigger bait, I’ll throw the 4.5" (and sometime larger) swimbait. I do not get as many bites with the larger baits but the size of the fish goes up. I’ve grown to love the Sunline SX1. Pound test-to-pound test, it’s smaller in diameter than PP and it gets far less wind knots than PP. When/If it does get a wind knot, it picks much easier. I don’t get many but I literally haven’t had a wind knot I couldn’t successfully pick out yet with the Sunline SX1. Sometimes the way you spool the line on to the reel can affect how it comes off of the spool (also, the way you close the bail on a spinning reel). If you don’t have a spooling station at your disposal, make sure the line goes on in the right direction.

I also got some of those weighted gamakatsu hooks and was pleasantly surprised by their action they give to jerk baits. got a flounder in shem creek yesterday morning on one.

I prefer the ones with the spring lock.
