Plusses and Minuses

Fished the Cooper yesterday. Water was 43-45F everywhere I went, from 526 to way up river.

(-) In Flagg creek I saw my first floaters. 1 trout and 1 mullet. It was a cormorant party in that creek. No fish caught.

(+) I was able to locate a tightly packed school of reds that hit and fought as hard as the water temps would allow. Most of them had the red lesions on their sides that they often do this time of year. Tagged and released them all. Sizes 17 to 28.5 in.

Thanks for the report! Hopefully the real cold weather is on its way out and things start looking up for the fishery. Thanks for all you and Ralph do.

“…be a man and PM me.”

This week should help a lot! Traditionally our temps reach their lowest point in January so hopefully the worst is behind us. Reports have been optimistic and pessimistic depending on who you ask, so hopefully that’s overall optimistic. The water is still so cold I’m hesitant to feel too pessimistic because I doubt the trout are going to be too active till it warms a bit. Kinda wait and see attitude…

What do you think about a cormorant hunt like was done around Santee?

I’ve watched them in my pond and dad’s stab and kill bream only to let them go and not eat them because they were too big to swallow.

I’ve watched them all around Beaufort and have no doubt they are taking many fish. I don’t think they have any natural predators. Maybe it is time to thin their numbers down.

Good report Dave. Had to leave the expo early for a Bluffton visit. Two of my grandson’s fished near Harbortown and caught three nice red’s. All released, came back to the May River and fished some dock’s. Caught four more keepers. All released. Carolina rig with cut mullet.
Wouldn’t touch arty’s.

Awesome report, thanks! The Expo was a pretty good time and it’s always good to put a handshake on you and Ralph, the stories and chat are usually the bonus!

No trout yesterday?

Still waiting on my first 2018 trout. Only been out twice so far. People I trust are catching em so that’s good news.

ABSOLUTELY! WAY too many of those d*mned birds everywhere. I wonder if allowed to shoot them would you still be required to haul the carcasses out? I say let the crabs have them!

Birds need to be harvested and properly disposed of.

The public freak out when flocks of dead birds start floating down the river.

Then you get the attention of all those people who don’t understand and the hunts get shutdown.

Quiet is best for all.

Need to add flipper to that hunt!!!
