Polar Vortex/ return of YFT/ Lowcountry

So, just wondering if anyone else sees the change in weather pattern bringing Yellowfin Tuna to Charlestons offshore waters as a potential outcome? Reports show tuna on the move… Opinions?

If Mitch Roffer thinks yes then Im going to go with Yes. Very few people in the world have more knowledge and data to back it up than Roffers

Do you know of a link to such forecasts? YFT vanished the year that I moved here… about 8 years ago or so, but some of my fishing buddies speak of them and hold them in very high regard:smiley:

You won’t know until you go…Wish casting at its best! If they do show up it will be great

Sounds like we need to sacrifice LandSick! Lol

Back when we used to catch yellowfin I would also frequently find weedlines, sometimes miles long. I have not seen wide, long, healthy lines like that in years.

We also used to have some serious East Coast tropical activity back when the tuna were around. I wonder if those systems, moving E-W didn’t have something to do with pushing fish and weeds closer to the ledge?

Saw them last year but they were 250nm east of the Charleston jetties. We were going from Puerto Rico to Philly.

Where did you find this information? I really hope he is right. My very first offshore trip I caught a 50lb yft. Haven’t seen one since of SC coast. Would be awesome if they make a return.

I have been to several seminars that Roffers gives- the currents south east of the abacos are what directs a high percentage of our fish here- if they don’t get in that current (which moves alot) that get pushed into deeper water and past the whole east coast on the east side of stream before coming in closer off OBX- the guy has been studying currents and ocean activity longer than anyone around - if you have the chance to speak with him…don’t speak, just listen

So he is saying that the currents have changed???

What I understood from talking with him is that the currents change a lot, but the last time there was the strong current moving off the Abacos towards Florida (that Fishnbarrels was referring to)early in the year was the last year we had a lot of tuna (I think it was 2005 or 2006). It is pretty apparent on his old SST charts when the currents go towards the East Coast and when they don’t.

I know this isn’t the flow off the Abacos but the last couple of days have been money as far as water conditions at the hole. Especially for this time of year.

looks like a huge backflow eddy up at the Hole! Look for the big white Ganetts “tuna birds”. If they are there…So are the Yellowfin!

Roffers is one of the only companies with access to those detailed maps of current movement that he shows at his seminars- he shows loop video of multiple days in a row with it moving and it allows for identifying and labeling certain currents and movements around the Abacos and anywhere else you are studying- pretty crazy that such a small current window has such a big effect on the whole east coast and fish migration patterns
