Hey, Wirenut, you chillin and grillin and using that trolling motor in da snow
I can be Shea too… I’m ready to go fishing.
I’m kind of with Larry, I started with trolling motors about 15 years ago or so and have since gained about 50lbs. No more carpel Tunnel though! 30 Trout!!! I can be Shea too!

Too funny, Dan:smiley: I don’t think you need my help finding fish though.
The trout weren’t too surprising, we were fishing a deep hole in a small creek where I expected trout, but I didn’t expect to pull 30 over slot reds out of a 20’ deep hole on high tide, in the middle of winter! You ever seen that before? Just goes to show you, fish are where you find them.
With all these Shea’s, I’m going to need a bigger boat!

I met Larry recently at BB&Dock. I am outta luck. He knows I’m not Shea, dagnabit.
My $0.02…I use my trolling motor ALL the time. I’m too lazy to pole. Got a bow seat set up far forward so’s I can run it sittin’ down. Now that’s fishin’
I have to give it up to Jighead when he comes down from Tenn though. He like to think he’s in charge. G8rnsc & I have learned to tie a bell on him when the fishin’s slow and he nods off, so we know when he falls in the water. ![]()
Unfortunately, I just sold my last two bow mount hand controls. I do have a friend in Columbia with a Minn Kota 74lb. Riptide Autopilot with 54 inch shaft for $500 OBO. Let me know and I’ll put you in touch.
I still haven’t bought a boat. But I have this horrible disease that causes me to research the $hi+ out of every purchase I make that’s over $200. So I am still gathering information. That’s the reason for the question about TMs vs. poling. I’m thinking really hard about pulling the trigger on a new Ankona SUV17 but I need some more $$$ first. A 55# thrust TM on a new Ankona is an additional $850 which seems reasonable, but it’s still $850. Another part of me says to just keep paying for charters since I can’t move to the coast for another couple of years, and that probably makes the most sense, but being sensible isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I can still fish from my kayak, but loading and unloading it is a lot like work.
If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
Never caught Reds in the winter in 20’ of water. But with the back to back mild winters I don’t think the Reds know where they are supposed to be. Finding plenty of Redfish, big ones too but almost all have lock jaw, I could understand if the water was cold but not now. Some days we can catch but lately tons of fish, no bits.

That’s been my experience too, Coach. These fish must be discombobulated (kinda like me I guess!) ![]()
Troll. Like the pros on TV. Cover lots of water, wind is less of a problem, sneak up on schools and catch more fish. I polled for 5 years. But ya have to admit it looks cool. Also, get the dnr book on redfish, great resource. Says inshore reds generally live in less than 3’ of water till they get big enough to head out toward sea.
.
Just like everything else with boats youre going to get some advantages and disadvantages. The trolling motor would probably be pretty useful for trout fishing when drifting a bank too, if you like to fish like that. No reason not to have both if price isn’t an issue. If you don’t get the trolling motor you’ll be fine though, personally havent used mine in years. If you want to pole yourself, just get the right tools. Pushpole clip for your poling platform, or belt and a rod holder within reach. You’ll figure it out with a little practice. Good luck, super excited for your skiff search!
i made this up but i think it’s true
I always wondered how people tear up the foot of their motor. I guess if you can afford a jackplate, you can afford to run it in six inches of water suck up some bottom tear it up and get real close to fish:) For the rest of us, pushpoles or trolling motors are best and most I’ve seen aren’t liquid cooled.

If you ever spent much time on a push pole in the summer, you would know that they are liquid cooled too. Takes me about 6 beers a mile ![]()
A good jack plate cost less than a good saltwater trolling motor, and not much more than a name brand push pole. And I’ve never in my life tore up a lower unit ![]()

I haven’t heard my name being yelled this much since last week at your mother’s house. HEY OH! I guess it’s time for the real Shea-Shady to please stand up! LOLOL.
Larry, you don’t “owe” me anything but I am still looking forward to taking you up on your offer come springtime my man and I very much appreciate and enjoy our conversations.
It must be a “yank” thing but in the winter the last thing I think about is fishing. It’s snowboard season, boys!! I’ve taken up residence in Utah and Wyoming shredding the fresh pow-pow as usual. These $2k trips every third week have my bank account dwindling, and United Airlines coffee is starting to taste bad, so I’m slowly switching gears back to fishing. I like to fish, I like drinking beer, I like to argue, and I like the palm trees and salt water in my relatively new lowcountry habitat… but I am a boarder/skiier first and foremost ya see!
Doesn’t anybody down here ski or ride?! and oh yea, (something about poling or trolling)…

I’m sorry, I must be confused with something else. Because I’m pretty sure (at least in my experience) that…
