Gents,
as many of you know, I represent Georgetown and Charleston Counties in the House of Representatives. My committees are Agriculture, Natural Resources, Environmental Affairs and Wildlife. Those of you that know me know that hunting and fishing is my life outside of work and family.
So here’s my issue: I have Democrat opposition in November and need to raise some funds for a successful campaign. I was considering hosting a flounder tournament fundraiser. Fish in the bay or the inlet…your choice. And we’ll all get together afterwards for a big fish fry. I’m thinking we’ll do this in the fall if people are supportive of the idea. So my question is: would you consider entering such a tournament to support a Representative that supports your outdoor heritage?
Please be honest. I don’t want to spend lots of time and money on this project if it’s going to flop. Thanks for your time.
I’d like to preface this by saying I am all for keeping what you catch (within legal limits), but to be completely honest I think having a kill fish tournament is contradictory to conservation, and I think we have too many of these now. Even though they are all for a “good cause”. Good luck with your campaign.
I’d likely be in but I think hank gives you something to think about. Might consider a multi-species tournament with C&R rules on the Reds and Flounder as the tablefare.
Thanks for the input thus far. At Hank: I work with CCA and DNR on a regular basis investigating, writing and implementing new limits and regulations for the state fishery. I don’t know many that would be uncomfortable with a kill-fish tournament for flounder only; especially if they are caught within the legal size and creel limits. We’ve made very good progress with our flounder regs and they’re paying off in dividends. Furthermore, the tournament could limit the fish weighed to one or a maximum of two.
With that said, would you participate in such a tournament, or do all kill-fish tournaments turn you off from participating? I’m not judging, just curious for future purposes.
I’d love to fish it. I would suggest trying to find a date that Clemson and South Carolina are not playing on if possible. That would probably help the turnout if it works out.
I don’t have much time for things like that. I spend my weekends chasing kids or pursuing game on my own terms. I’d rather make a contribution to your campaign. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

@yellabird, To answer your question. I have no problem with a Flounder kill-fish tourny, and yes I would participate if my schedule aligned. I am under the impression most of the profit comes from Local Business Sponsors and I know they get hit up for several Fishing Tournaments already. I’m not saying your cause is not worthy of sponsoring, that was just my first thought. I am also aware of your work, and appreciate it. Good Luck!
If it is an issue to do a kill tourney, then let’s have a release tourney. Hey, I have a release well on the Hewes, but Jonah will probably catch a doormat that wouldn’t fit in there. LOL If this heads in the right direction, let me know what I can do to help you get it rolling!
Really good info here. Thanks guys. I appreciate your support. When and if this happens, I’ll need y’alls help in spreading the word. Any preferred weekends? I know Clemson/USC home games aren’t good ones, but how about some specific dates that work for everyone. Election is early November, so preferably no later than mid-September. That will give us time to put some of that money to good use.
You’d better do it early in September, the later in the month it gets the more most fellows in these parts want to shoot bambi.
