Poll- Mono Or Braid

So who uses mono on all or most of their setup’s and who uses braid. Interested in the responses.

I’m not good enough to fish mono

Mono on most of my rigs, have braid on a couple. Still stick to mono for the most part, price being a factor and maybe I am just to stubborn to change completely, plus its always worked for me.

Braid (20-30lb.) with mono or flouro leaders for most of my presentations and unless I have newbies in the boat. In which case I make sure they have rods with 8lb mono. Love the line mending on top of the water, no stretch and the long term durability of braid. Hate wind knots and having to tie on new leaders, but it’s worth the trade off.

Optiker, 10lb braid?? Makes we wonder if I’ve been going to heavy on my 2500 & 4000 series reels?

Braid on all spinners. Inshore I use 12 to 15 lb. braid on offshore bottom with mono on trolling rods.

Mono on bait casters as a crows nest is impossible to untangle with braid.

Braid. Hands down.

Even cheap “off brand” braid from Amazon is better (smaller, less stretch) than premium mono, and about the same price.

I have slowly been switching to braid mainly for the extra casting distance.

20-30lb power pro braid is all I use for inshore spinning rods.

Wow, you guys go heavy for braid.

I use 10 inshore so I can cast a mile when needed. On 2500 size reels.

With a good reel and proper drag setting, its all I need. I’ve caught 34" reds on it. Its so thin, I can hardly see it, so I only use a leader when chunking plugs with trebles to reduce fouling. Otherwise I tie directly to the jig.

That being said, if you’re soaking cut bait under docks for big reds, it won’t be strong enough for that.

Thanks Optiker, I just ordered what will primarily be a jig combo (Stratic 2500 w/Compre 7’2"ML) and may try spooling with 10lb PP especially if I really don’t need a leader with that set-up. Have always used leaders on my PowerPro and sloppy knots have cost me a few fish. Problem is, if I like the 10lb. stuff, it’s gonna cost me a fortune to switch most of my rods to it.

Not sure where you bought the Stradic, but if you buy local (Haddrells, CA) you can sometimes get them to spool it for free. One of the many perks of buying local. When I use a leader I use 15-20 lb fluoro and a triple surgeons knot. Make sure the surgeons knot is tight or it may slip - but if its tight its very easy to tie and very strong. I usually tighten the braid first, then the fluoro then pull hard on it to test it. Another tip: don’t use 10 lb PP “slick”. Go with the original.

You will ask 10 ppl for their recommendations and get 10 different responses, probably all will work. This just works for me.

For braid consider trying a nano braid such as spiderwire invisi-braid the difference is unreal for small reels!

Braid.

What I dont understand is before the mid/late 2000’s or so, mono was the only game in town and everyone was fine using it and caught plenty of fish with it. It worked well for millions of people for years and now nobody uses it?

Years ago, soft black “braid” was the only game there was. I now fish with all three … braid, mono and fluorocarbon. If the water is super clear I want fluoro. If I’m fishing in weeds I want braid, or braid with a fluoro leader. I pretty much reserve mono for throwing topwater or shallow running crankbaits. I try to use the best line for the situation. It helps to have plenty of combos already spooled and ready to go.
