I have a few more days to fish to my hearts content, and I have it my mind that I want to learn to catch pompano in the surf.
Today, I went out in the surf and located sand fleas. I used a relatively small circle hook under a float with one piece of splitshot and flouro leader. I had a few bites, but they ate the meat out of the crab and I never got one on. I thought it might even be pinfish the way the bite was so peck-peckish. I was fishing in the suds, sometimes only 5 to 10 feet past the water line. I fished about a half mile of beach in front of every sand flea patch and in every slough.
Suffice it to say, I’d like better results. If anyone has any advice, I’d appreciate it greatly. Would love to get into some pompano before my time fishing during working hours runs out.
We used to catch them at garden city on high tide around the groins on the last 2 hrs of the rising. Beach "renourishment " killed that. Haven’t seen one since.
Soup knows how to catch them… Haven’t seen him post in a while.
Try small peices of cut shrimp on small hooks right in the breakers with a med/light pole. We used to do well with them in the surf at Huntington State Park like that. I used to have the same experience with the sand fleas until fall when the bigger ones came through with the spots. GOOD LUCK MAN!!!
We’ve had great success with bottom rigs with pieces of shrimp. For Pompano, I like a “Pompano Rig” made by Sea Striker and sold at most tackle shops, whereas my wife will just use a homemade bottom rig with #6 long shank hooks. Good luck!

I don’t know where you are, but it seems if the fleas are there, so will be the pomps. Hasn’t it been like 6-7 yrs since they renourished in GCB…?? I cant remember the year, but we slayed the big pomps there a 4th O July 4-5 yrs ago.
as noted, if there are mole crabs there, then the renourishment shouldn’t be an issue. my only successes with them have been in summer, 8lb mono, small j-hook and a large split shot to keep it rolling around on the bottom. usually real shallow right in the soupy wash, fresh shrimp was what worked for me. hope you find em dude!
