Are they isolated catches in SC or can you target them?
They can certainly be targeted. Just find a beach that has sand fleas. That means the beach hasn’t undergone re nourishment in the recent past. Use the sand fleas as bait. Another tip is start around the fourth of July, and don’t toss your bait out too far out past the breakers.
IMO… in Charleston yes they are a more isolated/random catch.
If you head to the Grand Strand though… I think you can get em good.
I agree with what Redstripe said… July, sand fleas, Grand Strand beaches, bait in the suds (shallow)… you will get some. Heck I might drive up there and try it, I got a buddy in Surfside
I caught a 4 pounder on Folly 4 summers ago… man that thing was good eating!

The main key for Pomps is water temp. 80-85 is ideal for numbers. Fishing the shallow suds is good for the small/average fish, however the bigger guys will be in a little deeper water. I find they seem to feed on the inner and outer edges of a sand bar and on top, when the tide is up. If the tide is falling fish the outer edge or on top of the sand bar. Incoming, fish the inside, just in the trough. And the Mole crab/ Sand Flea is the #1 bait, that’s the biggest problem. But for sure, if you find Fleas, with the right temp, the Pomp’s are probably there. Small Fiddlers are good too and weed out the Whiting…problem #2…they like Moles as well. Pompano will hit fresh shrimp also, so does every thing else though…#3. Pomps have very small mouths, when targeting them, I’ll sometimes drop down to a #4 j-hook.
Use a small hook with a piece of shrimp the size of a pencil eraser, and use the freshest shrimp possible. I have caught more this past year than the year before at folly, fish in about 10 inches to 2 ft of water but none of them where big all where under a pound. Fishing this close cuts down on the whiting, stingrays and increases the drum hits but I didn’t catch any over 20 inches.

X2…last time I found ANY fleas down here they were tiny. AND Pomps are VERY, VERY YUCKY! If you guys catch any for sure you can call me as well. I’ve had to incinerate a few on the grill this summer. Takes a lot of fresh dill, pepper and lemon to get the stink out!
Tiny red wiggler worms also work.

I caught my share in the St. Helena sound last summer.
If you run your boat shallow pomps will jump in it.
