when is the best time of the year to catch them?
Around here not a lot fish for them, but Late Summer is best in the surf just past the foam. Sand Fleas if you can get them work best or a small piece of peeled shrimp on a #1 /#2 hook. Very hit and miss for me. South end of Edisto and off Otter Island have only caught a couple over the 1# mark. Nothing like the big ones around Florida.
They catch them in Fla Ga & NC. They skip right over SC - In my opinion, its because of all the beach re-nourishment. When they do that it kills the sand fleas . If you don’t see sand fleas , you will not catch pomps. The only place I’ve ever done well is Bulls Island surf. One day I caught 5 over 5lb each. The surf at Bulls has sand fleas everywhere.
thanks.

I remember about 40 years ago catching them for Dad on Edisto Beach, last time I was there I was trying to find some to show my daughter and did not get one Sand Flea.
I’ve never seen a Pompano in S.C. over 2#. Good job!

You can wear the little ones out against the rocks at Edisto.
Some years we do year well for them in MI…Some years not so much.
Pawley’s Island and garden city beach. Tore them up on those beaches back when I was a student at coastal Carolina. Mid to late August was best
