So we got rid of our bay boat and have a pontoon boat now. Anyone ever shrimped from a pontoon? I think it would be difficult.
I’ve shrimped from a pontoon many times and actually we caught more shrimp because 2 of us would throw off the front. We put bait on both sides of the pole and pull straight in,one threw on one side and one on the other. Not easy driving if it’s really windy though.
Best deep hole boat there ever was
It would depend on the boats layout. If it has an open casting deck up front that would make it easier. If you have to throw the net over a rail and haul it back in over a rail that’s much more time consuming. Saw a guy with a pontoon with no sides literally stake the boat at each corner and bait around the boat. Never had to move the boat. He was always by himself and usually did quite well.
True, I would have to throw over the rail. I do just fine in my 16ft job boat. But I know some people that want to go with me and it’s just a 2 man operation in the jon boat with gear.
The once was a guy who shrimped St Helena sound out of a pontoon with twin 115 motors, he drove it like a skid steer and sure could run a set of poles quick. Always did well. Had a generator and it was lit up like an airport. Neat operation!
I have seen a pontoon boat with rings welded to each corner. They pulled up to their spot put a couple of poles out on each corner. Drove some spikes in the ground through the rings and rode the tide up and down. The boat never moved. I do not recall how well they did, but I do recall how I thought it was a cool contraption.
