Was wondering if anyone has seen any in the Charleston area as of yet? Water has hit the magic number down in St. Helena’s at least.

Rooky question, but there is only one poon I know of and it’s not related to fishing.
Care to fill me/us in?

Tarpon are often referred to as “poons”.

I agree Cracker, exposure to the great outdoors couldn’t hurt.
Back on topic, do the poons come into the rivers, harbor, near shore, or off coast?
Maybe someday I’ll screwup and catch one.
August and Sept are the best months around here.
I almost never target them around here, but usually catch a couple every year by accident.
The most consistent place is probably in the mouth of sounds and between sandbars on the beach fronts, but we caught 2 last summer while trout fishing, 10 miles up Broad River from the ocean. Ya just never know.
I know a spot near Savannah where there is a 80’ deep hole, way up in a small creek. Water boils out of the hole all the time, making me think it’s an underground artesian well or spring. In late summer the tarpon are in there by the dozens rolling on the surface. I don’t know if they are there because the water is fresher, or because it’s cooler, but if you know a spot like that, check it out.
