Ok, so did a little fishing yesterday. One trout. But, this isn’t a report.
The guy I bought the boat from obviously didn’t think things through when he installed the PP. I’ve been concerned about this for a while, but hey, ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Well… now it’s broke.
As you can see from the photos, I now have a sizable hole in my transom. I’m thinking doing the repair with starboard and obviously cutting out the damage and new fiberglass. But, I’m a little iffy about messing with the transom, so I’m here hoping CrackerLarry can point me in the right direction. Or maybe even offer to make the 2 hour drive to his place and help me with this (ain’t too proud to beg). The last time I had an issue with this boat, Larry was super helpful and pointed me in the right direction, which I am forever grateful for. However, that job took me about 6 months to finish, which I’m not willing to do again.
It’s an old Malibu, great little fishing boat. But, it isn’t a foam or wood cored hull. Just fiberglass.
So, here’s some photos for you guys to check out and give me some guidance. I do have some 12 oz biax cloth left over from the last job, is that what I would use here? Should I glass the new “standoff” or just drill through and seal? I dream of the things Phin and CrackerLarry do with boat construction, amazing stuff…
Fingers crossed… Thanks guys!

Jeez, wood, really? PP’s aren’t cheap, it doesn’t make and sense to go cheap on a mount. Hopefully Larry and others more knowledgeable will come along with some advice.

Yeah, no kidding. You should have seen some of the other nonsense that I’ve replaced/fixed.

Oh man, that ain’t good. Did it pull that fender washer all the way through the transom? That’s got to be one of the worse installs I have ever seen on something as expensive as a power pole. I’ve seen plenty of bad installs on a lot of things, but that’s just ugly.

I’d have to see it in person before I can give you a solid opinion, but I can fix it. The damage is too extensive for me to tell you I can do it for free, which I try to do whenever I can, but I can fix it. Can’t tell you how or how much without looking at it. I’ve fixed a lot worse than that though. If you want to pull it down here, I can work on it in my spare time.

Goodness. I don’t know the proper way to install a Power Pole, but what happened to yank that huge washer through the fiberglass?

Ouch! I’m hurting all the way out here just thinking about that.

It’s not so bad from a repair standpoint, at least it’s just a couple of holes
Check out this one I repaired a while back. The boat is a 27 Sea Ox used for offshore commercial crabbing. The owner had bolted a full 4X8 sheet of 1" Starboard to the side of the boat, with 15- 1/2" carriage bolts and 2" fender washers behind them. This was to protect the hull from crab pots being winched over the side.
He got in some bad weather and somehow a wave forced water between the sheet of Starboard and the hull, and ripped off the whole thing[:0] It pulled all 15 -2" fender washers through the side of the boat, each one left a ragged hole about the size of my fist. He said it sounded like a Vulcan mini-gun when it ripped out. I reckon it did!

Nothing but a thing. I can fix it

Wowza, that’s nasty!
Is there a connection between Sea Ox and Sea Fox? It seems that they are different companies but that font is almost exactly the same.

Not that I know of. They did make a line of smaller boats called River Ox.

Ok, so got the PP taken off this afternoon. It seems like it just “tore” the glass on the bottom side of the mount. Better than ripping the whole thing off I guess. So, like I mentioned before, this is not wood or foam cored. The hull is about an 1/8" thick right here just fiberglass. The spot where they installed this was filled with foam, which they cut out to access the mounting points. So, to do this right, would it be best to cut this entire section of deck out to put proper bracing on the inside of the hull, or could you get some “backing” down in there to give the mount some backbone? 6" access hatch.
Larry, I’m going to call you tomorrow. This weekend and today has been nuts. Is there a good time to catch you on the phone?

Ugly! Call any day, 9A-9P. If I don’t answer tools are running and I’ll call you back. That whole area needs to be cut out, a backing plate of 3/4 ply glassed to the inside, and the outside filled and faired back out. That transom was no way thick enough to support the stress of a Powerpole. An overlapping plywood plate on the inside would have worked fine.

do yourself a favor and get the fiberglass repaired, and DO NOT remount the powerpole to the transom
order the engine bracket and mount it to the bracket
