Poppers for Reds?

Hey guys, I’m new here and I got a quick question. I got a handle on the typical patterns for reds up in shallow water, but do any of you guys ever use poppers? Ive read that down on the gulf coast guys use small poppers to catch reds when they’re up in shallow water. These poppers are usually tied in #4 and down, like bass sizes. Anybody using anything like that?

Thanks!

What a blast. An EKG should be required. Deer hair poppers work, think wounded mullet. Nothing fancy really. Not generally my first choice, but the do work, esp on deeper flats. Deer hair lands like a feather and can be worked just under the surface, more like a natural.

Reds have a hard time grabbing surface flies. Nevertheless, I love using a deer hair rattle mullet. You get less hookups but watching them chase and grab at it will give you a heart attack. It will either draw an explosive strike or scare the daylights out of them.

one fave up here is the accardo gray ghost. FW hook so it wont last long. working on a version with salt hooks.

we dont need no reservations we dont need no cruise control

Sliders and Gurglers will also take fish1

Gray ghost huh? I’ll see if I can find a picture.

I got some cigar floats from walmart today and cut them down into small popper bodies. Gonna finish them up this week and try 'em out this weekend. Tied on a #4 Mustad C47S D.

those look yummy. try putting a mono loop (antifoul) and a jumbo rabbit strip tail. never thought off trimmin down floats. Nice, you use a dremmel for that?

Scotty d, I was thinkin of using some marabou, but I might have to get some zonkers and give that a shot. As far as the floats, I just used a razor to trim them.

The bou and the wabbit both work fine, I’d use the bou when you want a smaller more suttle profile go the rabbit when you’re looking for something that’s going to push a lot more water with a much larger profile. You can also use craft hair and supper hair if you need something that more dourable. Buck tail also works well but it doesn’t hold up quite as well as the synthetics. Lately, I’ve seen some pretty cool TWP that’s used nothing but crystal flash & flashabou.

I saw a tip on another forum where a guy was using spent casings in different calibers as “cookie cutters” to get popper bodies out of foam pool noodles.

Trust me, while your pinned down taking enemy fire and you call in for air support and you hear a jets afterburner crackin the air overhead would be the most liberating sound you could ever ask for. I haven’t experienced that first hand in actual combat, but I have trained in a similar scenario where it still makes the hair stand up on your body.

Interesting. Did he heat up the casings or sharpen them? I would think they would be hard to push through the noodle foam.

Finished 'em today…

Haven’t gotten out yet, tide is looking right for the middle of this week, so I’m gonna try and get out one evening.

Thanks. We’re trying to put one together for our company and I figured I’d see if I could put one together, and what better way to learn than to talk about something you love?

Fun.

stuck a 23" red on a crease fly tied by my buddy john yesterday… we were getting them on top water plugs so I pulled out the long rod… it was a good time no doubt!
