Popping Cork question

Sorry about that. Finger slipped…
Has anyone noticed that when fishing a popping cork when the current is strong rarely produces? I just noticed this and was wondering if it was just me. Also, what hook do you use when using Gulp alive shrimp under the cork? Thanks

Allow your float to drift along with the current vs. holding it stationary. You will be re-casting every minute or two but will cover much more area and keep your bait looking natural in the current…I fish popping floats in hard current all the time.

I have always used a 1/8oz jig head with the Gulp! 3" shrimp. Slayer produces a quality jig head with a stout hook to put the heat on reds.

Just my .02

I have been using the DOA deadly combo with a glow doa shrimp, I do not let it just float with the current. Short hard jerks with short pauses attract the fish and they notice the shrimp sinking. Yesterday around noon caught 15-20 trout and a decent jack cravalle. The glow shrimp works just as good during the day as it does at night. I like the 1/2 oz, seems to attract the bigger trout and less chance of the trout taking the lure to deep.

I prefer to have some current and use it to ā€œnaturallyā€ bring whatever the bait by. However, I have never had success with a popping cork in rapid current, live or artificial bait.

Thanks everyone. Sometimes I just feel like my live shrimp under a cork doesn’t look as natural in a rapid current.

then…um…don’t fish rapid current? try the eddies and slow water produced by the structure near it.

Fish are too valuable to be caught only once.

Believe me, I wish I had a boat so I could fish where I wanted. I’m very limited in my spots.

then do some driving…there’s more water to fish from the bank around here than one thinks.

You’re right. Thanks.

My apologies, i thought this referred to live bait under a float. At least my tachnique produced about 40 last week…but just my .02…

You def need to pop it and work it along when using artificials, like mentioned. I usually pop it hard twice and then pause for 8-10secs

Sorry for the confusion. I was referring to live bait (shrimp) under a cork. But also asked about what hook I should use for gulp shrimp.

I am fairly new to the area and really cannot get a fix on if is better to bounce live or DOA on the bottom or use a cork? Is just personal preference?

It’s a one rod in the hand deal. Cast to close cover. Let it drift by bank and structure to get to the fish rather than reeling it past. Let it free spool out. Click and set when it goes under. Just the opposite of fishing an artificial. It you want to let one soak throw out a carolina rig on the bottom.

Thanks for the advise. As you suggested, I used a carolina rig with live bait and caught my 1st Red on the Cooper.

X2 This has been working for me for years.

Karma is 360 degrees

How deep do you set your bait from the cork?
