Popping cork topwater combo

I’m sure this has been done before but I haven’t seen much of it. I was thinking about getting a large zara spook or similar topwater plug and removing the back hook and tying on my leader to that eyelet. I imagine the middle treble hook could cause some tangling but it could be removed or replaced with a J hook.

Why is a popping cork better than this type of set up?

It depends on what you fish behind the topwater lure. A spook won’t walk with something behind it, but a large Pop-R or similar works great with a weightless fluke or DOA behind it. The front treble doesn’t foul too badly, especially on the longer popper type lures.

I’ve been told that a full size spook will still walk slowly with a short leadered DOA on the middle hook eye.

Bucket list goal is to get a flounder on topwater, I’ve had them try to eat my floats before in 2’ of water, so I know it’s possible (DAVE!)

A popping cork will probably attract fish from a much greater distance. I try and cause a ton of commotion and make fish even from a distance think they are missing out and come investigate. When I fish a spook I fish it sloooow. It’s not going to attract fish from much of a distance. One other thing, if there is much chop on the water the plug isn’t going to cause hardly any commotion.

We fished yesterday and actually pulled in one slot red from behind folly beach on a grub. It was windy and gusty and combined with the current, it was pretty choppy. I imagine that was not the time for a cork, right?

When using a popping cork should I try to leave it in the strike zone (where I suspect the fish to be holding) and then pop it back once the current pushes it out? Or do I do a slow retrieve popping along the way?

Maybe a better question is how do you fish a popping cork.

i like to pop it a lot…

A cigar or egg shaped popping cork seems to me to do better in calmer water. The concave top poppers seem better in choppier water as they make more noise. Not true 100% of time but, more times than not IMO.
