tell me more about these popping floats. what depths when popping. what kind of bait should be used. how you work it ect…
broading my spectrum
Usually 2-3’ leader. Mudders, mullet, or DOA’s for bait. Have cigar shapes for calmer waters and cupped top poppers for rougher waters. A bunch of different brands - some with beads and such. They work - I always have a rod rigged with one in the boat. You can get close to grass edges and oysters without getting hung up so much. Just keep twitching it back in like a walk the dog plug. Simulated fish busting bait. You can pause and change it up to see what works best on the rhythm.

Shrimp under popping cork = dynomite.
I like the floats with the concave tops as they seem to make a little additional noise when you pop your rod tip.
Live shrimp under the popper beside an oyster rake w/ moving tide. When selecting a pobbing cork I would suggest one with a weights on one side of the cork.

Fished FL last week unlike I had EVER fished before.
Cajun Thunder float, NO MORE than 18" leader, small jig head, gulp or ZMan shrimp.
Cast as far as you can. Rip the snot out of the cork 2 or 3 times to make a godawful racket and splash… wait a few seconds, repeat.
You wouldn’t believe how many trout and reds we pulled out like this.

It is very strange to me but I do not catch nearly as many reds under a popping cork with artificials here as I have in other places. I don’t know why?

I’ll use any float, but I also prefer the popping concave-top ones. They’re a little on the heavier side given the tackle I use, but I just have a little more confidence in them.
Capt Tom - I actually find that I catch more reds under a float than I do trout. All depends on what’s around when you get here, I suppose!
I must be doing it wrong also, because I catch 50 times more reds on the bottom than with a cork. I guess it really depends on where you are fishing, tide, etc.

I like the DOA white with red head shrimp.Free line that or the chartreuse shrimp and hang on.Still the Lehi shad is my choice for trout or reds.Trouble is blue fish kill it quick.

In the upper Wando I was fishing a concave popping cork and my buddy was using an old repainted Cajun Thunder - - for reds and occasional trout. I got tired of being outfished 2, 3 to 1, so I put the Cajun Thunder on and caught up with him. Bait was live shrimp. Learned my lesson. ![]()
I once swore by popping corks…used them all the time…I too have gone to “drifting” baits more, caroline rigs…or using a cork with a split shot under it and a ruber band on top (old school style) to quickly be able to change depth of hook as needed…

That is how my Granddad fished, adjustable float with a rubber band. Sure worked for him.
