Possessed Johnson

Well, maybe not, but it (25hp Johnson w/ remote controls) would not crank this weekend. I got it to fire once Saturday but it does not have any spark. I replaced the power pack about 6 months ago. Someone suggested to check the kill switch - so I pulled the lanyard off yesterday and it seemed fine but I played with it and then reinstalled and BAM!!! It runs like a timex! I thought I solved the problem except I come back a couple of hours later to try it again and it does nothing but spin. I am thinking I have a short somewhere. Is there a way to bypass the kill switch? I also now question the ignition switch as it has developed a catch when you turn the key I really have to force the key to turn to reach the point to engage the starter. I had a boat one time that would not cut off by the ignition switch so I guess it could go bad and not turn on??? I am thinking that I should replace the ignition switch in the control box since it really is not working properly to eliminate that possibility. Suggestions or ideas? Help!

I think you can cut/ disconnect the yellow/black wire that goes to the kill switch. I have not had to do it on mine, but was told by a boat mechanic years ago to do that if I was out on the water and lost the clip.

My 95 Evinrude does the same thing. I was told by the mechanic that I have used in the past it is either a microswitch that tells it if it is in neutral or not, or a short in the ignition. His suggestion to me was if it will not fire while you are out on the water unplug the harness coming from the ignition and just jump it off the solenoid to the starter. This has worked for me in the past. He said he could spend hours looking for the short and never find it. So, I am going to run mine until it quits permanently and then let him look for it.

my Johnson was possessed one time, I enjoyed it!
