Basic law: 4 bucks and 4 does per year.Everything must be tagged.

I’d say 8 deer a year would still be hard for a lot to achieve.

Will they charge for the buck tags? Most likely they will. Another revenue stream for DNR.

8 tags - $15 for residents, $30 for non-residents.

Thanks obama. Not that I can personally eat more than eight deer but I do give some away to hungry families. How about the shoot to kill permit? Or is that different since there just poor farmers?

It’s certainly not a revenue stream. The fees will only barely cover the costs of administering the new regulations.

What is it about is a reasonable conservation effort to deal with two growing and very serious problems in SC.

Coyotes are decimating the white tail deer populations state-wide. Current control methods for this predator are ineffective. On my hunt lease, I found remains of 9 fawns this past summer. I shot a small yearling doe that the back legs of were shredded by a coyote, or a dog the night before.

The second is the more serious one, and I believe the main reason for the bill. Go back through the hunting report threads and read the numerous posts where folks have taken the time to boast that they know someone, or has themselves has killed 20 deer by early to mid-season. That’s not conservation, and it is not quality deer management. Its simply “market hunting” or hunting for the sake of killing something.

I hunt to eat venison. I have no trophies hanging on my walls. I hope to kill two a year, because that’s all two of us can eat. If I take three, I have a little more to share with guys who are much older than me who can’t hunt anymore, but have shared hunting wisdom, and in two instances, given me a couple of valuable hunting firearms that were their favorite deer takers.

This is really a reasonable effort that will do a lot more than be a big revenue stream, which it will never be. This is about the only way that we will ever be able to get an even slightly accurate assessment of the deer population, the health of it, and movements; the only way to make a truthful assessment of the validity of the “bragging”; and, the only way to assure we will have a quality deer population worth hunting in SC.

The more we just complain…the more things stay the same.

What this guy says…

8 tags - $15 for residents,

That only $1.88 a deer. Jeez, cheaper than a box of shells or a squeeze tube of deer scent. Seem reasonable to me.

I agree with Big Wes.

Are you talking about depredation permits? They are valid for 30 days, and are renewable if you need more time.Contact SCDNR for more info.

Sen. Campsen and Turner are the ones you need to thank for bill S 454,not sure why you are thanking Obama?

8 deer is a lot of meat.

I am good with it. The deer population is down significantly.

What this guy says…

I think it is about the money in this one single aspect: South Carolina has never regulated out of state hunters in the same manner as its neighbors, and these are the folks who I believe should pay a bit more for consuming our resources.

“In 2012, the average American consumed 71.2 pounds of red meat (beef, veal, pork, and lamb) and 54.1 pounds of poultry (chicken and turkey), according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The average amount is likely a bit higher. The USDA doesn?t take into account vegetarians, who consistently represent about 5% of the population, according to Gallup polls. The charts below factor in vegetarians as being consistently 5% of the population, driving the average per capita consumption of meat in 2012 to 75 pounds of red meat and 57 pounds of poultry. The most recent data for 2013 will come out in February.” http://blogs.wsj.com/numbers/how-much-meat-do-americans-eat-then-and-now-1792/

8 ‘average’ sized deer would yield approximately 48o lbs. of venison. Any one that needs more than that in a season either has an extremely large family or is killing to be killing. Most folks would have to have two freezers to store that much venison.

Here’s the actual bill:

You really think deer population is down? I don’t see it in colleton county. Just this week alone I’ve counted 18 dead from vehicle contact in a close area.

I agree that coyotes are taking a toll, but don’t think it’s as bad as some say. The only real numbers that I’ve seen are the studies done on the SRS. The last 5 or so years deer have been a huge a nuisance for us.

Personally I would love to see a few more does and scrub bucks taken instead of the “trophy” bucks everyone seems to want to hang on the wall and brag over. If we could do that for a few years then we all would have better genetic deer and everyone would benefit from a better chance of getting a trophy deer. Also if a lot of hunters could just have a bit of patience and let a 1st year buck walk.

Not knocking anyone that likes hanging a trophy and bragging, used to be that same way. Now I just like to eat a couple a year and from time to time help with some depredation permits where none are gut shot with the hope they make it out the field to die. All ours are given to those that can use the meat.

I have no problem with QDM or any other kind of deer management. I do not see any reason for anyone to kill over 8 deer a year. Most people who go out to achieve more are usually in it for bragging rights. I have a family of 4 and we have never eaten and processed over 8 deer in one year. If I kill more than that, I give them away to others as charity. An average of 400lbs of processed deer meat should be plenty for the average hunter. Personally I would like to see them go to 3 or 4 points on one side statewide. This would allow the younger bucks to grow older and give the hunter more chances at a trophy.

Ups, the only problem with going to 2 or 4 points on one side… what about all the older small 1 per side that need to be culled? I have personally seen a few large spikes (split 2/1 spikes) that are in the 3-5 year range. Those really need to be taken.

As to the rest. 8 deer a year is much more than most can achieve. Very liberal quota.

I agree. I think this speak to the big problem with SC deer season. No limit on bucks, tags for does. The "if it's brown, it's down" mentality on bucks depletes the gene pool.

I’m surprised this hasn’t really happened sooner, because from a management standpoint how in the world do they know how many deer are actually being harvested?

while they are at it, why don’t they delay opening from Aug 15 to Sept 15 and extend to end of Jan.
Sitting in a stand in the swamp at 100+ degrees is no fun.
I would live to hunt in January.
