Powder Coated Trailers

New to Kayak fishing and looking for/needing a trailer. I’ve heard of buying the trailers cheap from Northern Tool and modifying them but their trailers are powder coated. I am wondering after time how well they hold up with the salt water. Anyone that has bought powder coated trailers/non galvanized trailers provide ■■■■■■■■ on the longevity of the trailers in salt water? Thanks.

I guess as long as you don’t dunk them at the landing, and rinse them off when they get dirty they will last. I’ve seen several of these trailers being used for kayak hauling.

I would think you could get by with a modified jetski trailer. Those seem to go on craigslist all the time for $200-400

You wouldn’t be backing the yak down into the water like you would with a boat, would you? If not, like elgeebee said, just give it a quick rinse and it should last indefinitely.

Since you are not dunking them in saltwater, I would think they would be fine for what they cost. Certainly I would rinse it off after a trip out as water would drip off your yak onto the trailer. I have looked at a folding model with 12" tires. If I can finish a couple of projects around the house, I may buy one to make into a yak trailer myself.

Get on Harbor Freight’s mailing list, and wait until they send that 25% off coupon - then get your trailer

Thanks Guys. I appreciate the responses. Yeah waiting on a coupon from there or Northern. They both have similar trailers but Harbor is cheaper (not powder coated), but then so is the quality, usually. Harbor Freight is great for tools you’re only going to use a couple of times. I’m hoping their trailers will last longer! Be nice if I find a trailer on C-List for a good deal.

Just pick up a used PWC trailer on CL. There is usually 2 or 3 out there at any given time. For $200, you can’t beat it. I have even seen galvanized ones on there. Doesn’t take much to convert it to a solid yak trailer. I’m watching for a tandem one now. If you ever gave up kayaking, you could probably sell it and get your money back out of it.

Brant-
I may have a 25% coupon for Harbor Freight at home. I’ll let you know.
