I didn’t know the name of it, but it has worked for years on Murray. We used to throw big bucktails into schools in the winter, let them sink down and then horse them back as fast as we could. The strikes would almost take the rod out of our hands.
This method also works on Hartwell using flukes and other swimbaits. Keep the bait moving as fast as you possibly can and the spotted bass and stripers will explode on it.
The opposite, fishing super slow, seems to work well some days too. Especially in low light conditions. I guess it depends on what will trigger the fish on a given day.
I guess I have a different definition of “Power Reeling”. Me and my teammates have been doing it for years. I started doing this when all of my bait died. In the summer, it is not uncommon to use dead herring, when you would normally be fishing with live bait on down rods, to drop a dead herring down thru the school, and reel it back up. Sometimes a fast retrieve works, and sometimes a slower retrieve works best. Let the fish tell you which one.
We have used it successfully at several lakes. Try it, it does work.

Last year, Gary and I went to the Hill and couldn’t get a bite any other way, but I filled the box with good fish that day. He’s still sore about me blanking him that day! As my former fishing partner T-Bone would say, “It do work!”

Check out my buddy Mike Maddalena do some power reeling. I hope Gar-Heart will watch the whole video. He will notice a few similarities to what his partner does…lol Go to the 7:22 mark of this video if you want to see how power reeling works…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
Mikemad is da man! I’ve caught some nice teenagers power reeling but never a 28.9! Nice video! Maybe we can get Mike to come talk to the club one day.

Last year in August I went out with my son to look around one Friday evening before a Saturday tournament(Wild Hare). I had not ever really power reeled before but gave it a shot when the fish were not biting. Ended up reeling through a school of fish and stopped leaving the bait about 40’ deep. It only took about one or two seconds before the bite came. It was a 12 pounder! That’s really the only time I have done it and caught a fish.
