On or near our 20th year having family over for St. Patty’s Day Celebration. We did 8 briskets and boiled the veggies in the broth. Wife will make some white gravy out of broth to put over meat and veggies. Good stuff and good times. Head was a little foggy Sunday, but it was worth it. Took a plate over to Mom and Dad. 82 & 87 Mom’s still kicking like a mule, but Dad had a bad stroke a year ago, but still able to move around and memory is good.
Thanks Bob. Dad’s mostly house bound so us brothers have been taking care of the yard and pastures. All cows are gone, but mom still has the chicken’s, guinea’s and one peacock left.
That’s rutabaga’s. After the briskets are done. (4-5 hours slow boil). I pull em and cut some against the grain and one or two long pulled. Put the Rutabagas and carrots in broth and give about 20 min hard boil, then add onions for another 10 min, then add my potatoes for 10, then put in the turnips for 10 min, and the last thing is the cabbage for 10 min hard boil. Shut it down and test cabbage… don’t want it too smooshie. When adding the cabbage mix it thoroughly through batch . Don’t stir any more or you run the risk of destroying/smooshing all the other veggies.
When all done I scoop a pot or two full of the broth and poor over meat and veggies. Then the wife Takes a pot full of the broth and whisks some flour, pepper, a touch of salt and garlic powder and makes a white gravy to pour over everything.
Used to be a time when we could get the corned beef briskets cheap, not so much anymore. Want a real good corn beef “brisket” B.J.'s has an Eye of Round brisket… NO fat and fantastic. Just a bit more costly… Doing the big stew pot you want the Brisket to add some fat and flavor.
Thanks for the reply Fred. I was just wondering because I thought I saw some red taters in there and was trying to figure out if you did 2 different kinds or it was something else. Did allot of those items come from your garden, some of the carrots look crooked, nothing wrong with a crooked carrot:smiley: They work just as good, if not better:smiley:Glad to see you and RBF banging out the goods! If there is one thing we all can all agree on is good food, is good. It’s a time when we all can put our differences aside, give thanks, and enjoy one another’s company. Y’all have a great day.
I saw where you posted about sleep snacking on another thread. Are you taking Ambien by chance? That’s what does it for me. If I take my ambien and get out of the bed, I have zero memory of what I did, and a lot of the time its sleep snacking. </font id=“black”>
Unfortunately nothing from the garden this year, all store bought. But we do pretty good with carrots, got a little over a hundred pounds last year and they freeze well. I normally plant em in December, but It was too wet. Have to pull em before they take too much hot summer heat or they will rot.
this one was from a couple years back. You get some pretty funny stuff some times. Gotta take humor when and where you can!
“May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
…wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
…with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!” -Irish Proverb
happy st patricks day!..
