PRISON TIME for not reporting catches!

WTF is this country coming to?

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/news/crime-law/jupiter-charter-fishing-owner-faces-federal-charge/nTBx2/

Congratulations to those who support NMFS in the name of “better fishing”. Now, not filling out your paperwork can land you in PRISON for FIVE YEARS???</font id=“red”> You are a CRIMINAL because you didn’t tell Big Brother what you caught…

Yes, I get it… They signed up to fill out paper work, and they didn’t do it… Okay, so slap them with a fine or just make them forfeit their license… But FIVE YEARS IN PRISON!!! Come on!

Big Government is DESTROYING FISHERMEN. Wake up people before it’s too late! How long before we have to start filling out mandatory paperwork or face jail time?

Yet you can sneak into the country ILLEGALLY and get a drivers’s license and probably in state tuition. Are we screwed up or what!

The report said that he could be sentenced UP to five years in prison. It doesn’t mean that he will be. But I agree…a fine or loss of license would be more reasonable. On the other hand, he did knowingly violate a federal law. And the law is in place to help fishery scientists determine fishing pressure on various populations. It helps them get the accurate data that everyone says is needed prior to setting closures. Isn’t that what everyone wants, accurate information?/

Read it again, he didn’t not file paperwork, he falsified it.

Probably sat around the bar bragging how ‘I won’t file no stinking fish report. They can’t tell me what to do.’ :face_with_head_bandage:

Reminds me of the way some people on here expect you to post everytime you leave the dock…

“Yeah i fish offshore and yes i turn my VHF down sometimes,i know that makes me a bad person…”

on January 12,2007,President Bush signed the Magnusen-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act of 2006.

fishing died that day.

But Bush…jeez that’s getting old.

On Nov 7 2008, whatever Bush left, the socialist locust devoured.

DNR has been threatening me with jailtime since 2000 if we don’t fill out our charter vessel reports on time. 30 days in the hole.

He filed 4 months or days within those months that he didnt go fishing. However he sold fish on those days. He large fine would be enough. If he violates again then take his license but prison time isnt right .

BUT LOVE TO FISH> HINT

Where do we edit our post. I cant find it but thought there was a place before .

He was dual licensed. Probably sold fish that customers left on a charter and filed a “no fishing” because he wasn’t on a commercial trip. Illegal yes, but fines and\or suspension of privileges okay, but taking his life away and throwing him in prison shouldn’t even be on the table.

Good data? Yes. At the expense of throwing people in prison? No. He's not exactly a menace to society. Heck, slap him with a huge fine and use that money for the "better data" fund. Throwing him in prison costs US money.

I’m no layer but doesn’t every law have a "up to # of year"s attached to it for the people who just cant seem to follow the law? Doesn’t seem like it would be to hard to file a piece of paper when you returned to the dock unless you are trying to hide something. A fine would be more fitting than jail time in this case.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

He hasn’t gone to trial and been sentenced yet, he will probably just get a painful fine.

I think most our local game violations carry a possible sentence of 30 days in jail (misdemeanor?), not prison time. Of course he was hiding something. Again, his real crime was probably selling fish left over from a charter, which honestly is a stupid law to begin with if you have a valid commercial license. I suspect its only there because it's too hard for the scientists to count fish accurately (a joke in itself) for fish caught on a recreational trip, yet sold commercially. Honestly, its just a technicality. Has nothing to do with limiting fish harvest.

Fines only work on poor people.

It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!

Not sure that I know any "rich" charter captain's or "rich" commercial fishermen...
