Pro Cure vs. Gulp!

Scent is everything when it comes to fishing for redfish with a SLOW presentation. On tough days or with spooky fish, sometimes deadsticking is a necessary albeit boring method that produces better than any other technique. It has been my experience that when you have to fish painfully slow or deadstick, you will get more “bites” utilizing Pro Cure on your lures no matter what the brand plastic you want to slather it on(including Gulp!). For me, it adds up to about one third more bites. The interesting thing I have found in my trials though is that when deadsticking, they will come by and peck at or mouth the Pro Cure scented bait sometimes multiple times before they EAT it. I don’t get as many “bites” on Gulp!, but when you get a bite, they normally swallow it especially if it’s in a holder. When utilizing a weedless presentation such as on a flutter hook, some days you have to resist setting the hook on the first “tap” when using the Pro Cure scented plastic or you will miss the fish, but they almost always come back and take it deeper the 2nd or 3rd tap. It’s almost like they are more curious about it than anything. So, in conclusion, I utilize both. On some deadsticking days, putting the 2 together is the ticket, while on others, it’s tough to tell any difference between the two, but they are both VERY effective. One will outfish the other one day, then the reciprical will happen the next. These are just my own personal observations, and I’m sure there are as many different opinions as there are anglers, but in this post, I was looking for others to give their own specific examples of putting them side-by-side; not just Brand X is better cuz I know a guy or because I’m sponsored by them.

Well, the last few posts have been a lot more informative than that whole first page and a half of nonsense.

I sell both products side by side, day in and day out. Both are great products and both are very productive baits to throw. I personally prefer the Zman b/c of durability and essentially being a locally based company. Have fished them side by side on the same school of reds before and honestly, 6 in one and a half dozen in the other. Pro-Cure combined with the Zman plastics is one of the first baits, imo, that rivals the smell and productivity of Gulp…don’t think you can go wrong with either…just GO

I prefer the pro-cure scent on the Zman over the gulp. I think the scent lasts longer. (not to mention the baits last longer) I fished with a buddy on friday who was throwing gulp and I out fished him with my Zman loaded with pro-cure. Not to say he didnt catch any bc we both wore the fish out.

LOL…Don’t think I ever said that, but you have an opinion.

Got a question for Reel Hunter(Scott):

Did Gulp change the plastic they were using? They dont seem to be as soft as they were in the past. A friend of mine was using Gulp Ghost Shrimp the other day they seemed a bit harder than the ones I had seen in the past.

I might be wrong, but I don’t think Gulps are made of plastic. I think they are some kind of food based product, like tofu. Otherwise it wouldn’t shrink up and turn into gulp jerky when you leave it on the hook.

I use both Gulp and Pro-Cure, sometimes both together. Both are very good products, I have no opinion which is best but I’ve seen Gulps out fish live bait many times. A friend of mine and I once had a contest, he fished Gulp, I fished live shrimp. He out fished me 50 to 10. I about gave up live shrimp after that:smiley:

Gulp is in fact not a plastic, it is an “organic” biodegradeable material. That being said, I don’t really think it is a case of them changing their material recently, but more of a case where Gulp definately has a shelf life or expiration. I know personally if I leave the bags of gulp in my box for several months they definately become less pliable (sp?). What I now do with the gulps that I do have is to buy one of the “alive” buckets of a favorite style and then dump all my other bags of gulp into this bucket. The colors have not bled at all since I have been doing this, and it keeps them all soft by being in that liquid. The shelf life that gulp has does give the Zman product a little bit more of a leg up when making your choice IMO. hope this helps guys

That is the type of very specific personal experience I find very interesting and the reason behind this post. My appologies to I.F for the childish BS earlier. Just looking for more specific experiences such as this one that are pretty shocking, and something we all can learn from. To my knowledge, Gulp! is made of a polymer that is made to absorb a saline solution; kinda like a contact lens. What temperature they are stored in makes a big difference in how much solution they will absorb-ie. how tough or soft they are out of the pack.

I’ve outfished bait on more than one occasion. I usually chalk it up to the amount of ground you can cover throwing artificials.

Last fall I had more strikes on DOA’s sprayed with gulp shrimp then procure shrimp scent added. With that said it did go the other way on several days so we start out using both and whichever gets more reactions, we stick with.

I think that was what the post started out as asking, about the scents and not lures, but that is my 2 cents.

I fish with z man and use the pro cure on it. Go to Haddrells and pull a z man. That is a bait that will last.

Gulp has a place which is on the bottom. I do not like their action.

big dog

I usually start clients with different brands/colors.Some days they eat anything, some nothing.I’m going to use whatever is working best that day.Saying that, gulp has usually worked better.but I’m using more and more z-man.Less rigging, better action.Hell, some times all they’ll touch is an exude!Especially at the end of winter when every known school has been hammered.

I must be doing something wrong with Zman then, Ive tried paddlerz, jerk shads a variety of colors with pro-cure and NEVER boated a fish, however with gulp I catch fish every time I go…its probably me but JS, p.s I will definitely give you the “dont have to change plastic every time” gulp tear up real fast.

Same results here. Tried the others but always end up coming back to a pearl whiite Gulp swimming minnow with the curly tail. That is my #1 artificial. When the tails get chomped off I slice the “grub” into pieces and put it on little hooks to fish for pinfish and other bait fish.

Doesn’t the pro-cure come in different scents? What is the most effective?

i have put pro cure on a gulp and had good results before.

This is a 2 year old thread. What’s changed? Has anyone done the experiment?

I like using shrimp Pro Cure during the warmer months especially when on the flats or when targeting trout. Use mullet and menhaden Pro Cure more during the cooler months. I think some days it doesn’t make a difference but other days it makes all the difference.

Funny, this came up. I fished Sunday, and decided to give this a try. I had zman shrimp lathered up w/ pro cure, and a gulp mantis shrimp. Both white. Dead stuck the baits 5ft apart. Gulp produced 4 bites, and got zero bites on the Zman/pro cure baits. I couldn’t believe it myself. I’ve cashed a bunch of checks site fishing in tournments using Zman baits/procure baits. I think there both great baits. Just sux that gulps don’t last for sh*t. I hate all the hooks that work for Zman baits!! That said I hope that helps

I use BANG either Saltwater or shad scent. My preferred method is to pre-soak the baits in the bag prior to use…I use to sell the stuff years ago and it has produced for me…Would be interested in how other members apply fish attractants?
