Pro tip #67986: Thoughts on using.....

a planer on your downrigger? Anyone else tried this and willing to admit it?

We have! Tried it once and learned our lesson. Get a planer rod! Cheaper than a downrigger.

make a bridle rig…better than anything else we have ever used.

Paul, would you elaborate on this?

-Capt. Chris Rapchick

yella bote
no motor

I took my planer and crimped 400lb mono to it, cant remember the length of the mono.

Then crimped a loop in the end and added about 4 feet of rope.

I cleat it off the back and use a double ended snap swivel and a rubber band which I loop over the fishing line and clip onto the snap swivel which is attaced to the 400lb mono and slides down to send the bait back.

When the fish hits the rubber band breaks.

When I am ready to send another bait back just clip another double ended snap swivel onto 400 lb mono and repeat.

This way you just leave the planer down the whole time and get all ur snap swivels back when you decided to pull the planer in

I’ve used heavy mono with planers, downriggers with 10 pound cannon balls, and downriggers with planers . . . . . in 5 seasons of trying this trolling thing, I’ve yet to have a single hit on any set up!! Seriously!! Most recently, I’m using a downrigger with a cannon ball and like this set up a lot. It’s easier pulling up the weight over the planer, especially while moving. Now clips and rubber bands makes so you don’t ever have to bring it up, but you are stuck with the depth you put it at. So . . . .

don’t do it…

Here is a link or go see Jeremy at AGAT, and have him build you one. We can unclip the planer in 10 seconds and keep right on fighting the fish. If you are not running a planer you are missing fish.

Did you have an issue with our planer/downrigger rig Friday? You could have spoken up… It’s worked great in the past. Hell I’ve caught grouper on that rig while trolling.

Why wouldn’t you run a planer on a downrigger? It’s easy, runs deep, you can control the depth easy, retrieve it easy, etc…

Had a fish (most likely wahoo) bite the planer attached to the downrigger and almost ripped the downrigger out of the gunnel. Other than that only good experiences doing this. Planer doesn’t bang up your bote like the cannonballs and it’s easier to manage the line than hand-lining the planer up (if it’s cleated to the boat) when you need to get it out of the way while the bote’s moving.

How about a z wing instead of a planer?

I have been using a #5 braced planer off my penn downrigger for years…I spooled the downrigger with 200# power pro and put my release clip about 3 ft above the planer so you can access your clip without pulling the planer all the way out. You get almost a true 45degree angle as opposed to the standard 10# ball. Dozen ways to do it, but this has worked great for me for years. Helps me keep track of how deep im running my baits. Just IMO, I like it but like mentioned a planer rod is also very effective. I would not however do this on the lesser expensive cannon downriggers, be sure ya got an aluminum boom and all to support the pressure…have never had any failure doing this but thats me. Ask 10 fishermen the same question and you will get 12 answers that are all right!

z-wing generates too much pressure for a downrigger to handle.

I run the same setup as ReelHunter

I really didn’t have an issue with it I just would rather have a cannonball. I dont like all the line in the water, and no one reeled it in when a fish was on.

TRUST Sells on this one! Bridle rigs ARE the ticket! If the angler holds tight while the rig is unclipped there are NO problems. These things produce, and Jeremy at Atlantic will set you up!

Cannonballs blow back more than a planer and don’t run as deep at 6-7 knots.

I don’t recall your arms being broke…

Atlantic will make you the entire setup while you wait. In fact they have a used Tiagra 50 on a new bent butt planer rod with swivel tip already set up with bridle rig and planer for $775.

I’ve just got a TLD50 on mine and I have more than that invested in it.
